I have a 3rd gen apple tv, it was working fine very happy with it, airplay was working brilliantly just done the latest soft wear update and airplay is no longer working. i have restarted it, reset it back to factory stander which included re downloading the new update but no still no joy.
any ideas?

Similar issue here. My AirPlay keeps disappearing from iTunes on my computer. Workaround I've found is to use it from another device (iPhone in my case, where AirPlay does appear) and then the computer can see it for some reason when iTunes is restarted. Give it a try if you have access to other devices - might help (might not too unfortunately).
O thank you, sadly it has dissapeared from all of my devices.
I'm having the same issue with an Apple TV we updated this morning. AirPlay was working fine yesterday and today no one can connect to it.
Nice to know someone else is having this problem too. trying to find a way of back dateing, go back to the last update, just cant find a mini usb at the moment.
Just to make sure the version of the software you updated to was: 5.3 (6105) -- About on the Apple TV.
Anyone having any luck going back to a previous version? I've downloaded version 5.2.1 for model MD199LL/A which is the 1stGen3. I downloaded AppleTV3,1_5.2.1_10B329a_Restore.ipsw. Unfortunately it's giving me an error about "firmware file is not compatible".
Looks like I'm stuck.

Same problem here - did the Apple TV update and now not working.
I've tried all of the above suggestions to no avail.

Restarting the router worked perfectly for me. Nothing evil here!
If restarting the router doesn't help, -> in appletv -> menu> general> restart.

I am having the same problem. Since the last update, none of my devices can see Apple TV on AirPlay consistently. They will intermittently find it and then drop again. Restarted and rebooted Apple TV, rebooted my devices, restarted the router. Nothing seems to help. Ay other suggestions?
I am having exactly the same problem. It only affects my Apple TV - there is no problem with 1st Generation Airport Express. My Apple TV will only appear in the list of AirPlay devices on both my MacBook and my iPhone 5 after it is restarted. After I stop using it it disappears from the AirPlay list of devices after about 15 mins.
I have a new Time Capsule and it sits beside the Apple TV and they are connected by Ethernet whereas the Airport Express is at the other side of the house and is connected by WiFi.
I've also noticed that the Apple TV also does not see the iTunes Library on my MacBook unless it is restarted.
I ended up switching to an N-spec Router and the problem went away.
Maybe just coincidence...but all is fine now.
I've seen this issue as well on an Enterprise level Cisco LAN with (4) ATV's. My hunch is that the 5.3 update has produced a "bug" around the ATV's ability through Bonjour to broadcast its presence on the LAN. It is almost like the broadcast goes to sleep (so to speak) at some point and this is why the ATV "disappears" from the Airplay list. As had been mentioned in previous posts, we are all finding ways to reawaken the broadcast only to find that the ATV "disappears" from the Airplay list.
