Those methods work, but the actual way to delete specific songs from an iPod shuffle, without doing anything to your main iTunes library, is to do the following. NOTE: This applies to a 3rd or 4th gen shuffle that you loaded manually (drag songs to it in iTunes). Automatic syncing works differently.

If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is visible, select the shuffle in the sidebar, under DEVICES. Ciick the small triangle to the left of the shuffle, to drop down its content list, indented under the shuffle. Click on Music there. Over to the right, the list of songs currently on the shuffle is shown. Select the song or songs you want to remove, and press the Delete key.

Alternately, if you use iTunes with the sidebar hidden, select the iPod in iTunes with the "device button." There is a row of "buttons" going across, that starts with Summary. Click on On This iPod there. This shows the list of songs currently on the shuffle. Select the song or songs you want to remove, and press the Delete key.

NOTE: If the iTunes sidebar is hidden, to show the sidebar, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.

If that's a 1st gen shuffle, which is white and about the size of a pack of gum, it (and the 2nd gen shuffle) work differently from the later shuffles (and other iPods). There is no Manually manage music setting, because it is (in effect) always set to manually manage music. However, it can only be used with ONE iTunes library at a time. So, if you set it up "last fall" using a particular iTunes library, and you are now using it with a different iTunes library, you need to set it up with the new iTunes library. That means songs that are currently on the shuffle (from the old iTunes library) will be replaced with songs from the new iTunes library. That may be why the songs appear "greyed out" on the shuffle, when viewed using the new iTunes library (because those are songs from the old iTunes library). If this is not the situation, and your current iTunes library is the same one you used to previously set up and load the shuffle, please post back.

Once the iTunes library and shuffle are "in sync." This is how to remove a particular song, for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle. Select the shuffle in the sidebar, under DEVICES. Over to the right, you see its Settings screen. Toward the top, where it says Settings, click on On This iPod to the right. A list of songs on the iPod is shown below (and the songs are not greyed out). Select the song you want to remove and press Delete on the keyboard. You can do this with more than one song selected. This removes the song from the shuffle; the song is not deleted from your iTunes library.

You have to go into your iTunes and remove the songs from your library, if you still want the songs in your library but not on your shuffle you need to go through a few steps.

First you need to make sure that iTunes is open and your shuffle is connected.

Click Summary in your iPod tabs and scroll down to the Options menu.
Click the "Sync only checked songs" button.
Then in your library just click all the check boxes of all the songs you want on your shuffle.

Sync your shuffle to finalize everything.

Hope that helped 🙂

I have a first gen iPod shuffle that sat in a drawer for a year or so. Recently i decided to pull it out and start using it again. Of course the computer I'm using now isn't the same and whenever I connected to iTunes the songs were greyed and would not allow me to delete any. If you're having a similiar issue to that you can click on the device and in the middle of the window towards the top (if you're keeping iTunes up to date) you should see Settings and On This iPod. Click on Settings and look for the retore iPod button. This will restore it to the factory settings. May be more extreme than you're looking for but if all else fails...it's worth a shot.

I've got a similar situation. I've got an older ipod shuffle, the one about the size of a pack of gum. Anyway, I've got songs loaded there (loaded last Fall, off a cd) which are not in the library. All songs are greyed out when I look at the ipod listing in ITunes. There is no " manually manage music" option. When I click on the triangle next to the ipod on the left side in iTunes, the only item listed below it is something called genius.

This has been incredibly frustrating. I simply want to delete some, but not all, of the tracks on this shuffle, and I find it incredible how apple and ITunes can make something so simple, impossible to accomplish.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
