Q: Lost backups and all my files with Time Machine while trying to recover it

Hi,

Recently I got the fatal Time Machine "reliability" error and it made me very annoyed. I had other several files in the Time Capsule such as iPhoto and iTunes Libraries. Time Machine said it would have to start a new backup and according to Pondini (http://pondini.org/TM/C13.html), I wouldn't lose my other files. So I accepted starting a new backup and suddenly I realized my files weren't there. I immediately stoped Time Machine from continuing but I'm afraid it won't be possible to recover my files. Does anyone has an advice on this?

Time Machine won't delete anything besides the sparse bundle.

So it sounds like either the entire disk directory was corrupted, or the disk itself is failing.

You might try power-cycling the TC.  That should trigger a directory repair, per the Verifying a Time Capsule disk section in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4522  That may take quite a while.

If that works, by all means copy that other data elsewhere ASAP.

It's not a good idea to mix Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's internal disk, as there will be conflicts over available space, sooner or later.

And of course, unless you back it up somehow, you only have one copy of that data.  When something bad happens, you risk losing it all.
