Q: Deleting an iCloud account that doesn't exist

I am trying to delete my iCloud account from my iPhone 4S that is synced with my old iTunes email account that is no longer active. The problem is that it asks for the password in order to delete it, but it does not accept any password because the account is no longer valid. Even when trying to look up the old account or password through the "Forgot ID or Password" link, it says it cannot verify the username, even after I have put in all my old information.

I can log into iCloud.com on a desktop using the new username, but I can't change it to the new one on my iPhone 4S without having a password, which doesn't exist. So I am stuck.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if anyone already posted this solution, but I finally figured it out after hours of nearly throwing my phone at the wall. The email address associated with my iCloud (which somehow got stuck in my new 6plus) was no longer valid (I do not have the password for it). I logged into my Apple ID with my current email address, which is verified as the iCloud address on my old phone.

Then in My Apple ID (on my laptop) I ADDED AN ALTERNATE email address--the old, invalid address stuck in iCloud. It says it sent a verification email, but I didn't have to log in to verify it. Right away, I was able to sign out of iCloud on my phone (using the password for my current Apple ID login). That turned off find my phone, or whatever it needed to do. And then I was able to log in using my new email address and all my iCloud info (contacts, etc) populated on my new phone.

    Hope this helps!

After hours of trying to tract down my Phantom AppleID that apple said didn't exist I decided to remake it. I re-created the same ID that Apple said didn't exist. That worked for me.

    SOLUTION

Ok so like everyone else i also wanted to throw my phone into a pit filled with various combustable fuels and proceed to light a le match and watch it le burn....  I have this phantom icloud account that doesn't work, no password works etc etc.  But here is the deal.  Using your computer, go to https://appleid.apple.com/  and click manage your apple id.  login on your current apple id and enter your current password.  You should be logged in.  Now where it says "Apple ID and Primary Email Address" you will notice it will be your current apple id, not your "phantom icloud apple id."  What I did was changed my new and current apple id to my old "phanton icloud id.'  It allowed me to change it (I believe the "old phantom username" is still linked to your apple id account since it was an old id-but at this point i don't care.  it worked)  Note:  stay on this screen.  Anyways right then i went to icloud on my phone settings and scrolled down and selected delete account.  Then just type in your current password as it is now linked to this "phantom" and it should delete the account.  Then, go back to you computer and change your apple id back to the current one you are using.  It worked for me.  Then i was able to just use my new apple id on my phone for icloud by signing in.  Weird and annoying.  But hopefully this helps!

If you have a current iCloud ID that is a newer version of the old ID (and not an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone and delete the old account.  Then go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.

If the old ID is not an older version of your current iCloud ID, you'll have to contact Apple for assistance resetting the password, either by going to https://expresslane.apple.com, then click More Products and Services>Apple ID>Other Apple ID Topics>Lost or forgotten Apple ID password, or by contacting the Apple account security team: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699.

If the old ID that is showing is simply an old version of your current Apple ID, do the following:

    1.     Go to Manage your Apple ID, sign on with your current ID and password, and then EDIT the Apple ID to the old email address. This is temporary. Do NOT verify it, do NOT change the password: Apple - My Apple ID

    2.     Go to Settings>iCloud on your device and scroll to the bottom of the screen to Sign Out/Delete your iCloud account. Type in your current password when prompted, and then follow the prompts to complete the sign out

    3.     Go back to Manage your Apple ID, sign on with the old ID and current password, then EDIT the Apple ID back to your current email address. You may need to verify it again

    4.     Go back to Settings>iCloud and sign on with your current Apple ID

Hi.  Guessing your fix was on earlier ios.  I have 8.3 and it did not work. I was able to delete the old address in Facetime and enter new one, but fix did not carry over to iCloud.  Thanks anyway.

Any ideas for 8.3?  Community seems to have gone silent on that.

What is your specific issue? Are you needing to log out an older version of your Apple ID that is still logged into iCloud? i.e., you changed your Apple ID email from john@gmail to johnnybee@yahoo, but the iCloud account is still signed into the john@gmail version? If so, follow the instructions in the post immediately following yours.

Thank you!!  I also had to change my Apple ID in Messages along with Facetime...and then when I went back to try to turn off Find my iPhone so I could logout with my nonexistant account, my current password worked for the old ID!  And when I logged back in, I used my current and correct Apple ID.  THANK YOU guys.  That constant pop up asking for that password was driving me insane!

Just in case if anyone still follows those instructions in most cases, they are not needed. Apple fixed it on IOS 8 and 9 Now using correct password you are in 99% of cases in IOS8 and in IOS9 can sign out with your CURRENT password without modifications on Appleid website. IF you are running ios 7 you still need to follow those. Saves a lot of headache.

This is also the solution for those of us with iOS 9.1.
