There is no hard drive requirement, as long as it's hardware compatible with the Mac. OS X isn't too big that it won't fit on any modern hard drives.


You will of course need free space on the drive if your upgrading OS X to a later version, I would suggest moving all your users files to a external drive first, then upgrading and if all goes well, then copying files back.


Don't fill a boot hard drive more than 50% if you can help it and certainly not more than 80% for any boot drive, SSD or HD regardless.
