How come when group messaging sometimes imessage is available and sometimes it isn't?

I'm currently in a group message conversation with several other people. Sometime when I reply the send button is blue (imessage) and sometimes it is green (text message). Obviously when it's green it sends out my reply to each person in the group individually.


Just to confirm,


  • I have ensured that I have had a strong wi-fi connection
  • imessage is enabled
  • this is happening during the conversation with other people, i.e. everyone is having a group (imessage) conversation but sometimes replies go as texts and sometimes they go as an imessage.


Does everyone in the group need to be connected to wi-fi at the moment in time when you want to reply?


Any advice would be appreciated, I can't find an answer or solution to this anywhere.
