Mid-2013 Macbook Air screen goes black?

Apple called this morning 12/13 and stated the engineers are aware of the sleep problem and to watch for a software update. I asked, "So this is not hardware related?" and rep said it is expected to be fixed with a software update and since this is a known issue they will probably prioritize this. I asked why it is happening to some mid 2013 macbook airs and not others, and he still said software should fix the problem. hmmmmmm.....

They also said you may wish to make sure auto update is active:

apple/system preferences/app store icon/check the box automatically check for updates (which is enabled by default)

Could stil be a hardware related problem that Apple try to fix (override) with at software fix. However my own experience running Windows 8 on one of my MBA's indicate it's software realted, since the problem doesn't exist running Windows 8.

Hope to see the update fixing the problem soon.

I called Apple after a local independent retailer looked at mine.

Here's what they changed:

Logic board

Display

i/o borad

Flex cable

The technician also swapped the SSD with his own and the battery.

After various attempts by him to find someone at Apple who could help, he found a nice young lady who called the technical section who had this to say:

"Apple suggest 'bug' in 10.9 as cause of issue. Apple are looking in to the problem as they have multiple machines being returned with the same problem."

So if you haven't taken yours in, please do so now.

It's hitting Apple in the wallet, so now they're paying attention.

The sad fact is that this issue goes back to 2011, my own 2012 version did it with my last company, so 10.9 is not the culprit so the next update won't change anything.

There is a fundamental flaw with the MBA, so I have declared it unfit for purpose - it randomly shuts down and there is no fix - and asked for my money back.

Apple are getting back to me on Monday.

Good. Nobody makes a laptop chassis like Apple, and it's hard to go back to anything else after using something as gorgeous as an Air for a few months, but it's worth it to avoid the non-stop problems they seem to have, and it's not right that £950+ of laptop can't do a basic thing like sleep without losing work in 2013. They've known about this for months and haven't publically said a thing about fixing it or even acknowledging it.

I loved my machine and miss it, but it's just not on.

Mid 2013 Mac Book Air (August 31, 2013). After installing Mavericks the computer stopped waking up from Sleep mode. I took to the Genius Bar. First time they did the PRAM thing. No problems for a day then 3 times the next day, death after Sleep. Took it back, they put in that logic board thing. Next morning, death after sleep mode.

Now I don't even bother allowing the computer to go into sleep mode. I changed all the settings to "never."

I think it's a software problem. Keep hoping Apple will come out with the fix soon. I've read others have received a new MBA and they still have the same problem so getting a brand new MBA isn't going to change anything apparently.

I will though let them know the logic board replacement didn't make a difference -- hopefully that will get them to take more notice. It's incredibly frustrating. It happened to me once when I was going a webinar! That's when I changed it to "never go to sleep."

Power button functions differently after Maverick upgrad...push twice in quick sucession to get access to old screen.

I've been PRAM 'd, logic board replaced, still happening...will advise when resolved and how. Turned off screen saver on battery for now.

This not correct...to smart for own good

New firmware installed today, available at app store supposed to fix problem.SMC v 1. 9 and EFI v 2.7. May not be answer to specific problem, but there is hope

Sorry to disappoint but mine has been running this firmware for some time but still got the BSoD issue both during the screen dimming but also occasionally when the computer has gone to sleep mode it has crashed and will not wake without a reboot.

I have installed caffeine software which can prevent the screen going in to sleep mode when working on important things.

Its a sticking plaster but it stops me losing important work and getting frustrated whilst Apple sort this out.

Took laptop into apple store, had motherboard and screen replaced.

Problem still exists.

I have the Black Screen (Blackout) problem too. My screen on my MacBook Pro suddenly went black just a moment ago. I was on a Skype call - which did not drop. I had Safari running. (I don't have Google Chrome installed.) It was a completely black screen with no cursor - nothing. I have had my MBP since July 2013 - no extended warranty. I have Mavericks - now for a few weeks. I had to hold down the start button to reboot. Everything came back fine. But this is very disconcerting.

I meant MacBook Air - not Pro 🙂

Work arround from Apple is: put battery and plugged in screen on never, use either menu to put to sleep or close cover(not both), if unresponsive to normal start up, hold power key down for ten seconds. They are working on firmware fix.

OS 10.9.1 was released today and it didn't fix the sleep problem with my mid 2013 macbook air. Spent an hour with Apple Chat and they repeated the word patience over and over again and that there is nothing they can do.

I don't mind waiting...just want to be sure this is fixed.
