Mid-2013 Macbook Air screen goes black?

I just got my shiny new mid-2013 MBA (haswell 13" i5 256GB SSD 8GB RAM) and it's been rockstar (no WIFI problems). However, last night, when I was browing the web, the screen went black all of a sudden and wouldn't come back on. I had to press the power button (heard the fan shut off), and then press power again to make the system wake back up from sleep. Any ideas what caused this, and should I be concerned in the future?

After a bit of web surfing I ran across this thread. The last 15 minutes or so, the screen on my 2013 MBP running MacOS High Sierra, has gone black several times. After reviewing this thread, I realized that my iPhone was near the laptop (running on battery). My iPhone case has a magnetic clasp and I just realized that every time the magnetic clasp passes over or near the Thunderbolt port on my laptop, the screen immediately goes black.

I have now done this multiple times to confirm I am not imagining things. It was just so odd, it took me a few minutes to make the correlation.

Hope this information helps someone.

Just a heads up, in EU we are covered if the problem existed since the beginning. I imagine you have similiar laws in Aus.

Basically if the problem, [Screen going black], has ALWAYS been present, [which it has in the case of affected laptops] then they have to offer you a replacement up to two years later.

'Not reporting the problem in the first 14 days' is a load of crap.

Apple have started deleting posts for arbitrary reasons so please join us on Fa ceb ook, search for MacBook Air Screen Goes Black. I don't expect this post to last for long but I'll keep coming back to get as many over to a public forum as possible.

We all know the problem, CNET have reported on it again.

Get a refund quick folks, I have, before Apple conjour up a BS reason to stop you.

Purchased in August 2013, refunded in December 2013 thanks to the 1979 Sale of Goods Act in the UK.

From what others have posted, Apple weren't doing it out of good will, they don't have a choice in the UK.

This post won't be here for long.

Search for MacBook Air screen goes black on Fac ebook and join the public forum for this issue.

New issue, despite sleep to never set on battery and plugged in power, with unit on battery, close lid, after a few minutes, melodic Apple bong, cover apple lights up and apparently machine shuts down or goes to double sleep. Open cover...all dark. Hit space bar..keys light up..black screen. Tap power button..a deep bong..but no screen joy. Hold power button for ten seconds and fires up , with warnings and a incident log. Is holding the power button down for ten seconds a hard shutdown and restart?

Spent hours on the phone with Apple senior advisors. Erased macbook air 11" mid 2013 and did a clean reinstall of Mavericks. Sleep/no wake problem is still 100% reproducible. Sent a second data capture file to Apple. Now up to six case numbers for this problem. Should hear a response Dec 24.

In the US with four failed attempted repairs with an Apple certified technician, Apple will replace unit (probably with a refurbished one). Therefore, if I don't hear good news on Tuesday, I will get three more attempted "repairs" and then speak with Apple Customer Service.

Same issue, my sleep doesn't reliably, when I'm on battery and shut the lid, when I reopen the backlight usually doesn't come on. Can require 20 or 30 cycles of closing and opening lid before it comes on, or a reboot. Tried SMC, PRAM reset, all the other tricks listed in this thread, no help. Took into the Genius Bar, they took it in back and checked connections, no luck. I tried to return it a few days after I bought it, but was a "custom build" and purchased through company, could not exchange or get rid of it, and now I'm stuck. Apple wants a week to "fix" it but they don't even know what's wrong and given the problems on this thread it seems likely I'll just get another bad laptop and just be out one week and unable to use for work. Now I'm facing just writing off the Air as a loss and going back to a non-Apple laptop, which although not a nice OS at least works reliably. Adding my woes to this thread, it's not like anyone is going to be able to help me, but I'm hoping at least Apple will realize they have a problem here and provide a fix.

A friend and I both bought the highest spec possible Airs 2 weeks before the "mid 2013" model was released. We simply did not know a new model was on the horizon. He kept his and I swapped mine for the new one under Apple's return policy when a superceded model is released within 14 days .

My friend has never had the black screen and I have had it at least 2 or 3 times a daysince getting the "mid 2013" build. So I know it is relevant to the mid 2013 build. Went into the Apple shop and they said they needed it for a week and it wasnt an issue the technicians were familiar about. Maybe they dont read Apple support threads.

Does anyone know for certain if the new builds of Airs dont have this problem?
