Mid-2013 Macbook Air screen goes black?

I just got my shiny new mid-2013 MBA (haswell 13" i5 256GB SSD 8GB RAM) and it's been rockstar (no WIFI problems). However, last night, when I was browing the web, the screen went black all of a sudden and wouldn't come back on. I had to press the power button (heard the fan shut off), and then press power again to make the system wake back up from sleep. Any ideas what caused this, and should I be concerned in the future?

You know i walked into the Apple Store over here and informed them of this problem. The guy was kind enough to allow me to demonstrate on one of the Airs on display and boom, reproduced. He also tried and found it reproduced. It's almost certain all 2013 Airs have this problem. So, i think the more the problem is reported, the more it receives the attention we all hope it gets sooner than later.

Zorina Xenia I dont think that really works. I clean formatted my macbook, iphone and ipad on the 31st last month to start a fresh with ios and mac os x. some problems vanished. some persisted. one of them is this one.

though i dont necessarily get a black screen. its usually a distorted display upon wake. when it happens, it happens several times in a day. otherwise it doesn't.

Thanks to everyone for their replies, I have put in a request for apple support I will call them, hopefully they can help out, but find sometimes they just fluff things off and tell you to buy something new...Happened to me last year I had a new Iphone and my computer got hacked (apparently through the iphone) and they told me to buy a new Iphone and back ups and support for this lap top, and all kinds of other things, since then have had quite a bit of problems with this laptop, don't think they really did much. If they suggest I buy another Mac Air (this one is only a year) I think I might have problems trying not to laugh, I don't intend on spending tons of money again on Apple.

I love Apple, but not too happy with them since this problem started a year ago, I might just go to a computer reprair shop but I did purchase the Apple Care so I will give them a try. I find on the phone they are pretty good, but in the store not always, there are some technicians that are helpful but the one I had when I took it in when it was hacked and he was told by a senior tech. to wipe out the computer (great lost all my stuff and pictures because the backup didn't work and took 3 months to get all my itune songs back) anyways, maybe it was just a bad experience so don't want to be bitter. Hopefully, they can give answers. Good luck everyone. The more they hear the more they will maybe fix this problem people are having.....Have a wonderful day🙂

I've got bad news for all those who jumped ship to a rMBP, looks like this is a common product issue:

MDN64--

You couldn't be further from the truth. Just got through going through multiple repairs (PRAM/SMC/etc., motherboard replacement, new MBA, different OS, etc) on a mid-2013 MBA 13" 256GB, and a manager at my local Apple store finally traded my MBA for a rMBP. The rMBP is running just fine and the methods to induce a black screen on a MBA do not result in a black screen on a rMBP. So, at a minimum, the rMBP is not anywhere close to susceptible as the MBA.

A few notes for others in this situation:

  • It is very easy to replicate the MBA black screen at will via a variety of methods, although Mr. Bergstrom's method from page 53 of this post appears to be most reliable way of causing a black screen. (Hold down the ”cmd alt/option” keys and press the power key then immediately after pressing the key combo, press random keys on the keyboard in an attempt to wake up the computer.)
  • Another way to cause the black screen on an MBA is to press the power and delete key at the same time. This was the killer isssue for the last Apple Genius I worked with, as the light bulb finally went off in the Genius' head of how easy it was someone to go for a delete key and accidentally hit slightly above the delete key thereby pressing power and delete at the same time, resulting in a lockup. This method caused a black screen less than 20% of the time for me, but it did summon a very humble Apple Store manager to my service.
  • The other way I mentioned to the manager to cause the lockup was to wait until the screen dimmed (either by no activity or a partial lid closure), then touching random keys or the touch pad.
  • The manager informed me that Apple engineers were still working on firmware update to fix the problem, but there is still no ETA. The best he could say was "hopefully within a few weeks".

Go to system preferences, then Mission Control, at the bottom left corner is a box titled "Hot Corners", click on this to see what is set for the corners. My wife's was set to go to sleep when curser came to any one of the four corners. This could easily explain why the screen went dark while typing various documents. Any contact with the track pad with her hand would be working the curser to a eventual corner.

I've been experiencing this problem most often on the subway, probably because of the jostling physical movement. Unfortunately I can't reproduce it reliably otherwise, so it would be hard to demonstrate at the apple store. I'm not sure contacting customer support would do any good, since they would probably just take it in for "fixing" and give it back with the same problem.

Get a refund, there's no rectification available or in sight and it may never happen - this has been going on since 2011.

That's interesting.

I had crashes happening on my Feb-12 and Aug-13 MBAs whilst in my bag going to and from the train station to work.

The Feb-12 one recognised the crash and recovered my work, the Aug-13 version just got worse and worse until it would crash whilst reading a document, untouched.

I've seen a video on YouTube showing the display going on and off as an MBA is picked up but that wasn't a crash.

Perhaps your MBA will help clarify the source of the problem.

Hi,

Finally, called apple support and turned out I had a corupted file that was causing all the issues, so no choice had to erase and restore, unfortunately lost my photos but thankfully they are all on my Iphone. The laptop is now working they it should be, not freezing, going black, and doing a lot of strange things. Don't know how it happened I am always careful anyways, glad I called, kind of weird I don't really download much but I know a few times my macfee was disengaged and I had to re-install it... Good luck everyone...hopefully mine will be ok, but I do have the apple care so I am now glad I bought it.

Bought a mid-2013 13” MBA in October, started experiencing black screen immediately. I called Apple who asked me to contact the vendor for an exchange. Thought I’d give it a shot before going through the hassle of setting up another machine and switched off the “Automatically adjust brightness” in display settings. Haven’t experienced another blackout since then.
