Mid-2013 Macbook Air screen goes black?

I just got my shiny new mid-2013 MBA (haswell 13" i5 256GB SSD 8GB RAM) and it's been rockstar (no WIFI problems). However, last night, when I was browing the web, the screen went black all of a sudden and wouldn't come back on. I had to press the power button (heard the fan shut off), and then press power again to make the system wake back up from sleep. Any ideas what caused this, and should I be concerned in the future?

Im using my MBA since september last year. Yes, I have "black screen bug" (it happend to my like 2 times). Yes I can reproduce this bug (in way, how it was described here). BUT it doesnt bother me. Why you cannot just forget about this and keep enjoying your leptop? Any way, for my point of view, the dust or yellow spots on Iphone's screen is much more worse than "black screen bug". So just keep in mind that it happend only when you touch button just before MBA is goin to sleep and try to avoid touching keyboard in this moment and you will be happy.

Well the MBA crashing and losing your work from time to time when the screen dims and you touch the trackpad/keyboard to wake it to find out that it went to sleep and you eventually have to hard restart. That is not fun for sure.

But what really bothers me most is knowing I have defected MBA that I paid $1500+ for and Apple is denying to respect its waranty, where there are Other MBAs that do NOT have the problem . That leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth . How do I sell this thing ? Do I tell the buyer your are bying a defected MBA but don't worry it does not happen offen ? Or Do I fool the buyer and hide that and say Apple thinks its absolutely fine,,, Or what exacty??

I personally can't let this one slide. I've lost research work that I did on the Air and had to start all over. Also the thought that it could happen anytime and you may or may not loose data is most troubling and not in keeping with Apple products so i think that's why a lot of us are posting more and more so that Apple finally pushes out a fix. (We hope) Also it's an embarrassment when your giving a presentation in front of everyone and your Air goes blank. They are many scenarios poeple can give why this is a serious issue that needs attention but am just stating mine. So i think if it worked for you, then that is very good an am happy for you but know the scenarios are different for a lot of people.

My solution was to be doing my research from my iMac at home which means i can only do research when i get home out of fear i don't loose data. If Apple can't get a fix, then i'll move back to the MBP, it's another solution but expensive. I would rather shell out money to use a laptop that is realiable because the headache of loosing data is much worse.

And like a user said, how do you sell the machine to another person. Lying that there is no problem is out of the question so you'll have to inform whoever that the machine is defective and hopefully they'll still buy it.

@BobSaggy--Couldn't agree with you more. The last straw for me was when I realized that the lockup/black screen occurred if i missed a direct hit on the delete key and hit in-between the power button and delete keys. Very frustrating to lose a lot of work when you are just trying to correct a typo!

I found a lot of patience and a lot of positive attitude went a long way to getting a very equitable trade-in on a rMBP from a manager at an Apple store. I simply got to the point where I just could no longer wait for a long promised fix. TBH, I miss the MBA's lighter weight the most, but the screen on the rMBP is flat-out incredible.

Just wait till the 10.9.2 version gets released. It has a workaround, which works as a fix for this. Apple's solution was to disable sleep functionality from the power button. So, now you don't accidently trigger sleep when you (accidently) press the power button. The power button now works like the one from iOS devices sans the display shutoff on quick press, ie, you need to keep it pressed for some time before presented with a menu for shut down, sleep, etc.

However, this doesn't address the problem of the black screen appearing at random. What I knew from people who installed the beta is that even that doesn't occur now(I mean have not occurred during the 3-4 weeks since install; hopefully its fixed too)

Just spoke with Apple re: black screen issue.

- They said they are aware of the issue and it's being looked at.

- They have been told to tell people 1) make sure you have done all updates; 2) Under System Preferences > Energy Saver, set both Power Adapter and Battery slider to "Never"; 3) Update to Mavericks

I'm doing 1 & 2 and holding off on Mavericks updates. Hopefully this helps.
