Aug 5, 2013 4:47 AM in response to jportnoyby mstrswrd06,Just happened to me again, too. Previous Sleep Cause: 5 in the console.
I can find absolutely no documentation on what this code means, so I'm just trying to figure out what that means for me. I read 'flat battery' in here before... does that mean I have a bunch of new Macbook Airs with bad batteries in them?

Aug 5, 2013 6:32 AM in response to jportnoyby Winthan,I bought 11" and 13". and I'm having the same exact issue only at 13" (MBA 8GB SDRAM- 512GB flash drive). It happends only a few times while working on 13" MBA for 1 to 3 hrs. So when I took took it to Apple Store. I can only tell them screen goes black, they troubleshooted it later, and it doesn't happens at there. Because the black screen comes randomly at sometime when i am using at home. There are No other obvious problems/symptoms with this new. it randomly happends. What should i do?

Aug 5, 2013 8:01 AM in response to Winthanby kimgood,You just proved that there are a certain portion of machines that don't have these issues, which means that this is a massive QA havoc ?
Unfortunately, my replacement was out of luck again...

Aug 5, 2013 8:03 AM in response to mstrswrd06by kimgood,Previous Sleep Cause: 5 aren't too many to be considered a major reason of this issue? In my case, there seem to be way more these messages in console than the issue itself.
Not sure we had these messages in pre-Haswell Mac.

Aug 5, 2013 8:13 AM in response to jportnoyby Pro4Life,I'have the exact issue here. This is my first Mac computer ever, not impressed!

Aug 5, 2013 8:23 AM in response to jportnoyby gtownblast,Update (check my prior posts for history)
Still no issues on my machine (or if it's happening, i'm not seeing it)
I think the issue has to do with timers (which someone else mentioned earlier) after doing
- an SMC reset
- PRAM reset,
- turning off the "put hard drive to sleep" on both battery and plugged in mode (in energy saver preferences)
- changing the sleep of the display to 15 minutes for both battery and plugged in
I'm not seeing this issue after about a week of testing. (this is my work computer and I use it for at least 8 hours a day, pretty much every day...
when i started posting to this thread, it was happening multiple times a day (that i noticed), I haven't had one blackout for a while (that I've witnessed).
Additionally; I don't think the majority of users would see this issue I was having if it was happening on their computer. I saw the youtube video of the guys screen shutting off every time he picked up the machine and clearly that is something different than I am having. (Or at least if it is the same issue, it doesn't happen on my MBA by moving the computer around, or putting a magnet next to the display. Which BTW, putting a magnet next to your computer generally isn't a good idea...)

Aug 5, 2013 9:35 AM in response to gtownblastby kimgood,Thanks for the update,
I remember someone said that you won't see this issue if you extend the sleep time to more than 3 min, so your case might be thanks to this generous 15 min.
I hope your solution still works on 1, 2 min sleep settings that most of users depend on.
-
Aug 5, 2013 9:36 AM in response to gtownblastby mstrswrd06,Just set my timers to 15 minutes - I'll keep everyone updated with findings.

Aug 5, 2013 10:39 AM in response to jportnoyby keribillen,My timer is set to 11mins and the problem persists for me....despite trying various settings for 'put hard disk to sleep' etc.
Am sending mine back for a refund. First time I have done such a thing for an Apple product (I've owned about 15 Macs of various guises in the last 7 years). Instead will stick with my 11" 2010 MBA and 2012 MBA with RD...both running Mountain Lion with no problems.
Good luck everyone and I hope Apple sort this soon.

Aug 5, 2013 11:57 AM in response to jportnoyby calguy2123,Happened again. This time on Power, not battery. Sleep interval is 10 mins and hard-disk sleep option is checked.

Aug 6, 2013 11:49 AM in response to jportnoyby Blackbird77,Hi all,
Also been having these blacks out issues, mainly when logging back in from a screen saver time out. However I disable the screen saver log in and it did it again today. Having read part of this thread I immediatly rang UK customer service. The lady ran through a number of checks.
1. disable "put hard disks to sleep"
2. got me to delete a power management file from the HD.
3. Got me to reset the power management system, by closing down the MBA, plugging the Macbook in the adaptor and holding Shift+Alt+ctrl+power button for 10secs then restarting the macbook.
She then gave me a reference number and said call me back if it happens again... and the wait begins.
13" MAcbook Air (Mid 2013), 1.7Ghz/8G8.
What with Wifi Issues and now this, not a good start to Mac ownership, especially having to have already returned my first macbook Air for turning up dented right out of the box.

Aug 6, 2013 1:14 PM in response to thenk83by mcatron,YEP! Have the same issue. Happens on battery and while plugged in. Often goes black while I am typing. A few times now, I have had to manually power down because it would simply not wake up. :-(

Aug 7, 2013 6:52 AM in response to jportnoyby teaforyou,OMG I'm having this problem too, resetting PRAM doesn't seem to work nor does toggling with the energy saving settings. I've scheduled a call with Apple Support and we'll see how that goes.
-
Aug 7, 2013 7:00 AM in response to jportnoyby mstrswrd06,After doing some more reading around on other forums and support sites (including here), everyone's narrowed the problem down to one of multiple possible causes.
- SMS (sudden motion sensor) not working correctly with the SSD drives (people self-installing SSD drives in older Macbooks see this issue as well)
- A bug somewhere in OS X 10.8.4 Build 12E3067
- Faulty graphics card
- Questionable battery output (The best answer to what "Previous Sleep Cause: 5" is that I can find)
- Disagreement between the power management and the new Haswell processors used in the Airs (apparently this comes straight from an Apple engineer)
I expect a software update would fix this in due time. It'd likely be an EFI update or may come in the form of OS X 10.8.5 - we'll see.
