Q: Mid-2013 Macbook Air screen goes black?

Hi All: My boyfriend's computer (recently bought MacBook Air) is experiencing the blackout, but now we can't get the screen to come back on at all. We've turned it on and off multiple times. It's connected to the power adapter.

Any advice?

You can repeat the issue by doing follwoing.

1. Unplug the power cable.
2. shutdown your macbook
3. start it.
4. when you see the login screen leave it for 30 seconds and it will trun off(that's normal)
5. now press any key and it will wakeup and show you the login screen
6. now login with your password and just leave it for 30 seconds(don't do anything else)
7. it will go back to sleep mode and that's NOT NORMAL.

This is NOT caused by Chrome and It's only happening on Mac OS 10.8.4 and I have tested Mavericks and It doesn't show this issue on that,

Apple is working on 10.8.5 update and hopefully that will fix the problem. I'm 99% sure it's a software related issue.

For those who are still facing is issue. I can confirm that this issue is fixed in Mac OS 10.8.5 and latest Mavericks developer preview 5.

It seems that way from my 2 days of use of 10.8.5 , but too early to tell. I still need to undo all the other setting I put in place previously.

Also, my experience has been that it take about 2 days of uptime to start showing up (memory leak?).

I'll report back in 3-4 days.

My experience has been the same as EBUzi's except that I did revert my previous "fixes" after I updated.  2 days without issues so far...

Ok, I have a Macbook 13inch, 8gb ram and 512gb HD.
Experiencing the same issues, and lately (after the latest update?) the problem is getting worse.

At this point it happens min 8 times a day, and I get this weird scrambled screen when i try to go out of sleep (all stripes). Then the login screen appears.

Not sure when this 10.8.5 update is available for all of us. But  I definitely would feel more at ease when I would see this issue is fixed...

How do I get access to the update? Via this forum? Or do we need to do something else?

I got my macbook air 13 inch two weeks ago. After a few days, went to the apple store with this problem, they replaced the unit. Now the 2nd unit is starting to go black randomly. grrr, might return it for a mac book pro

I have figured out a workaround.

If you go into preferences and change the time for the display to sleep to actually be shorter than the default, which is 2 minutes and change that to 1 minute, then the issue won't occur anymore.

Ben, I tried the fix, and it didn't work. I adjusted it from 10 minutes down to 1 minute, and about 5 seconds after I finished making the change, the screen went black again.

Btw which Mac OS version are you guys using?

I'm running 10.8.5 Beta and I don't have this issue, so just wait for Apple to release this update to all users.

I was experiencing the same issues, but after chatting with a guy from apple support it seems to resolved.

I was suggested to restore the energy saver defaults, and then to reset the SMC by doing these steps:

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
5. Press the power button to turn on the computer. 
   Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Hope that would help.

RoeeGold I did this weeks ago it does not fix the issue.

Sounds like we're all waiting on the software update.
