Q: Mid-2013 Macbook Air screen goes black?

I just got my shiny new mid-2013 MBA (haswell 13" i5 256GB SSD 8GB RAM) and it's been rockstar (no WIFI problems). However, last night, when I was browing the web, the screen went black all of a sudden and wouldn't come back on. I had to press the power button (heard the fan shut off), and then press power again to make the system wake back up from sleep. Any ideas what caused this, and should I be concerned in the future?

Some people still experience it. They said no Chrome installed!

I experienced 3-4 days of continous use (about 8-10h daily) WITH Chrome, WITHOUT blackout, so 24h is... you know. Nothing.

Does anybody besides me have this problem after recent firmware update? With or without Chrome.

    Yes, same here.

Red the whole hystory someone did a proper analisys and Chrome has been ruled out a while ago.

Still amazing how someone can start a runmour and it just cannot be defeated.

EIther way I had 3 blackouts within 30 minutes this week and then 4 days of no black screens at all.

There seems to be no rime nor reason to it.

Interestingly I have a similar effect on my USB 3.0 to GigEthernet adapter.

It occasionally just shuts down. I replug it it starts again

Will do this 3 to 4 times in a row then work for days without a problem.

I am purely guessing here but the whole thing seems related to a slightly over agressive power management implementation. (Well we do want to see 12 hour battery life so shutting down USB ports and screens makes sense if some process thinks its not being used)

It is about 5 different topics in this thread. And i've read alot of them on these 33 pages. And some of the have exactly the same hardware as me, and i think uninstalling google chrome will help them.

Becuase i have 3 days now, without any screen "blackouts"

Yep. I've tried with and without chrome and it makes no difference. Screen randomly blacks out if laptop is moved to a specific position. Seems like hardware issues rather than software, so I really doubt Chrome had anything to do with it anyway.

Took mine in today...i7, 8g , 11 inch...the guy behind the counter started pushing on the bottom of the monitor (below the screen) in various places and the screen started flickering.  he knew of the issue and said it was the cable that attaches to the top.  he had seen it before.  They ordered me a new one....My screen was totally gray with various vertical lines...acting extremely random.  I hope it is not a broader problem, very annoying.  the team in the store were very helpful.  The laptop was new and had not been handled/moved much.

Same here. With or without Chrome the screen goes black. It is a shame because I really like Macs, but there are so many bugs in this new Macbook air.

Same here. With or without Chrome, the display and keyboard lighting shut down while I'm on it and I have to hit a key to get it to wake back up. I've even seen this happen on the login screen. Called Apple Support, and they walked me through the resets. I hope this fixes the issue, but given what some have suggested, I highly doubt this resolved anything.

I'm having the same issue but mainly when I simply close the computer (without ******** down) and when I reopen it, the screen is black with just the cursor.  Both clicking and pressing buttons doesn't help. I called support and they guided me through a PRAM reset. I'm wondering if this has solved the issue for anyone?

After the Genius Bar replaced my MLB, I'm starting to experience the problem in the way you described.

This is actually the second MBA in a row that is having this issue for me.  I returned the first one 4 days after purchasing.

My problem with my 13-inch Mid-2013 MacBook Air is that I'll be using it on battery and it randomly freezes with a black screen and it goes completly unresponsive. What OS are you guys runinng? 10.8 - Mountain Lion? 10.9 - Mavericks? I can tell from what I'm seeing here that it must be a hardware issue with the 13-inch model. Mine isn't very frequent - just unnerving since I cannot trust my primary computer any longer. Thanks Apple!!!

Yeah - I agree. Chrome does not *cause* my machine to go to sleep after activating the display, but it *does* make it slower to go to sleep when my machine is doing that. The genius at the apple store said it is because of something Chrom does with memory. He mentioned that there is a test fix Apple is testing to address it.

For me, when it's slow to go to sleep, I can see the mouse pointer and move it around while the rest of the display is black. Takes nearly a full minute sometimes to go all the way to sleep. Once it's asleep, it wakes up quickly again and functions normally.

Yes that's exactly what I'm experiencing. Unfortunately I do believe it's only when I use chrome.  When I simply close the top and reopen it, all I have is a blank screen with just the cursor. I just got home from 4 hours at the 5th ave store and the guy completely wiped my laptop and fully restored it as if it was out of the box.  However, even when using just safari when I closed and reopened, the screen wasn't blank but it did take an unusual amount of time for the login screen just to show up. Now he said I need to call AppleCare in the morning to ask them to send me a new (3rd!!)laptop. Ughhhhhhh
