Q: Mid-2013 Macbook Air screen goes black?

I just got my shiny new mid-2013 MBA (haswell 13" i5 256GB SSD 8GB RAM) and it's been rockstar (no WIFI problems). However, last night, when I was browing the web, the screen went black all of a sudden and wouldn't come back on. I had to press the power button (heard the fan shut off), and then press power again to make the system wake back up from sleep. Any ideas what caused this, and should I be concerned in the future?

    Only answer is dont buy mac anymore. 3rd one done with apple .

    Okay. So you think all MacBook Pro Retina behave like that? I'm quite sure they don't. Sorry for your issues though.

    This helped people with this problem when I posted it some time ago:

     

    Chances are you have some third party software running that is not Mavericks compatible.

     

    Did you try running something like this in Terminal to find out what non-Apple kernel extensions are running:

    kextstat | grep -v apple

     

    As a next step you could try to isolate the misbehaving software by uninstalling some of it and retrying.

    Hello MDN64,

     

    Sorry to hear what happend to your MBA and I can imagine how it feels. I also have the 2013 13 inch MacBook Air and also had the problem where I lost some research data. I've been using  products since 2009 and that was the first time i've ever lost data. It was painful but their subsequent update fixed it for me and over 2 to 3 months now, i've not had an instance of it re-occur. I know it has not been the same for some and hope they find a solution.

     

    However I think advising people not to buy  products because of your experience is a bit going over becasue i think products we use are a matter of preference. It's ok to share your experience using  products but this experience does not apply to many, much less to all.

     

    My experience using other computers from other manufacturers has been terrible, and even my experience troubleshooting other computers for my colleauges at work is very frustrating. Our IT department actually keeps saying that they see more people getting  computers but very few of them come in with problems with their machine that needs fixing.

     

    So I DEFINITELY disagree with you that  products lack quality but understand that your speaking from the experience you had. Again, am speaking from my own personal experience. 

     

    To me, 's problem is that because they take their time to make the best products, we sometimes forget they are also human beings prone to errors and mistakes like every other human being.

     

    I've used my MacBook Pro from 2009 and gave it to my girlfriend in 2013 and my goodness, it's still brand new and rocking Mavericks all around in top condition. Same goes for my iPhone, iPad and my iMac.

     

    Anyway, I do wish you  the best and hope your MBP serves you well. I always say technology, which is a tool and nothing more:  "its a matter of preference". We are all different and prefer tools based on our preference.

    I agree. Loosing your work ain't cool at all. Hope the next machine you get from other vendors serves you well.

     

    For me personally  products have made my office and personal digital lives much easier.

    No its not: Whay kind of work do you do? Bobsaggy - Apple sold this as top line for photo and video editing , anyone that is using Apple well knows now that it is just not any good . All video has to be done in splices and clips 16 gb Ram isnt big enough . And rendering isnt smooth at all. Apple is great for games and general office work , But for a 21 century work station they fall short and are way over priced. 4 year old pc windows 7 back to using at 1/4 of cost. Next I will build .... Apple is pretty and could have more capability if they wanted by letting owers upgrade ...

    I've the same problem. My macbook air (128GB 13'', mid-2013) just goes black. The is no illumination, the rest is fine. The problem showed up after 3 months after the guarantee has expired. Apple should solve this problem, because it was not my fault. To fix it I've to pay more than U$900. It's almost a brand new mac.

    Me too,

    My Macbook Air mid 2013 black screen, but when I connect other monitor with display port, it already boot to Mac.

    My Macbook Repairs and Service Coverage: Expired.

     

    How to fix it?

    This just happened to me, which is why I am researching it. I have a MacMini and an ASUS monitor. Ironically, the moment I got the monitor back up, I got an email from GROUPON offering a new ASUS monitor. :-)

    I ended up here because my MBA died while I was traveling. Took it to the Apple store today and was told the logic board has to be replaced. And of course, it is three months past the warranty. I've always loved Apple products but if I have to buy an extended warranty to cover a defective part, I don't have confidence in their products any more. If they can't stand behind a product that has such a history of this problem, I can't trust them enough to continue purchasing their products. I can get a new computer every year and half much cheaper than my initial investment, much less having to pay to have defective parts replaced. I'm so disappointed that I've been put in this position of having lost confidence in these products.

    I have had 3 mac book air machines, since January 2013. Each one has the same problem. Screen goes black for exactly 30 seconds, curser moves but no screen activity. It happens randomly and sometimes 4 times in 1 hour, sometimes not for a couple of days. I have had 3 machines, same thing. Last week I took in the machine again for a check, and they said they sent the issue to 'engineering'. Today i got a call back and they told me it was due to having creative cloud. I told them no, it happened before i installed creative cloud. This has confused the apple techs for 2 years.

     

    Once when i updated to Yosemite it was fixed for almost 1 month. Then started right up again. Its very frustrating bc i give presentations and sometimes it will happen 2 or 3 times during a 20 minute presentation.


    The apple person who called me tried to convince me that i needed to call Adobe to work it out. I very rarely use my creative cloud, it is rarely even open.

    But this has been happening before CC install.

     

    Any ideas?

    I still have the issue, Apple engineering says its bc of Creative Cloud.

    Any solutions?
