I am experiencing the same issue. I was a 'genius' a few years ago, so much for that moniker. Computer had "issues" (won't start) to begin with so source of my problem may be different from the rest. Computer was plugged in to power adapter as it was dead, it started up (played start chime) after 10 min of charging. Screen was black. Plugged in external monitor. Flashing folder. Held down power button over 30 sec, just to be sure. Tried CMD CTRL ALT Power, 30 seconds. Plugged in external keyboard, tried eject button for 30 sec and cmd ctrl alt eject. No success. Going to let it run out of power then restart with bootable Lion install on USB. Unfortunately I don't know what OS is installed currently, nor do I have a Thunderbolt cable or thunderbolt ethernet adapter.

I can't turn off my macbook air.
