System HDD on my MacBook Pro has gone missing from Favorites panel of Finder and the root directory cannot be located.

I can no longer locate my system HDD in the Favorites panel of Finder or the root directory of the HDD. I have browsed Help for tips with no luck. Please someone tell me how to locate the root directory.
