making vlc default player

hey im new to macs, im trying to make vlc my default video player instead of quick time b/c quicktime wont play half the stuff i download. also any other recommended players let me know. anyways how do i make vlc default player instead of quicktime?

15 inch macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.4.6), 2 gig ram

To change the default player for a particular media type, find a file in the Finder that you want to play with VLC. Select it, and do a get info. There is a pane in the Get Info window entitled "Open with:"

From there, you can select the application you wish to open that file from. Select VLC. Under that is a button called "Change All..." which will make ALL files of that type open with VLC.

Hi Skip,

I tried to make VLC my default media player but unable to do so. I did what you said but VLC although in the applications library is not clickable, I can't choose it. I can only choose among the recommended Mac applications like Quicktime, iTunes, etc. Please advise what should I do.
