Volume levels on my iPod are different to iTunes?

I've manually adjusted all the volume levels on albums that were too quiet/loud in my iTunes library, but the adjustments aren't carried over to my iPod correctly. Albums I made quieter are now barely audible on my iPod. The adjustments have worked fine on my iPhone however. Would using something like mp3gain eliminate this problem?
