Bought a new iMac. Transfered all files from my old iMac. Connected the external HD that was on my old iMac to the new iMac. Time Machine is trying to backup my new iMac but I'm getting the error message that the backup is toolarge for the external HD. The HD is 1 Tb and has 595Gb available. What is going on?

How much space does it say it needs?
Is the external drive on the exclusion list?
It says the backup is 476.19 GB with only 125.06 GB available.
How do I know if the ext drive is on the exclusion list.
This back up is basically the same data as I backed up on my old iMac.
Well, TM is going to consider it a whole new Mac & Backup, but where did you see 595Gb available in the first post?
Have you run Disk Utility to Repair that Drive?
Can you afford to erase the external & start over?
