How to change default browser settings?

Safari keeps crashing and I can't change the default browser settings. Is there a way?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo

I was able to fix the problem with the crashing by updating Safari.
