Is it still not possible to use Airport Extreme with DynDNS?

So, I have a brand new Airport Extreme at home on loan (the 802.11ac), and I am surprised to find that it still doesn't seem possible to use Airport Extreme with dynamic DNS services such as DynDNS?

It's been a while since I used an Airport Extreme, and I was really hoping this had been implemented by now.

If it indeed has NOT been implemented, what exactly does the "use dynamic dns" in the configurations panel do? How can it be used to serve a dynamic DNS outside the home?

Apple is so user friendly in other areas, but this seems like a big mystery to me.

Just to be clear for everybody:

You can use IPv6 on your apple router with duiadns. If you have a hostname from a shared domain like duia.us for example, only A, AAAA dns updates will be accepted. If you have your own domain (you can have one for free from freenom.com if you want to test) duiadns will honor all dns updates sent by your apple router: A, AAAA, SRV, PTR, etc.

Is this ALL you did? Simply configure the global host name in the Airport Utility?

Which version of the Aiport utility are you using?

Because when I enter my info like you did, the utility won't even remember the hostname, user or password - the text areas are all empty when I close the dialogue box, and open it again.

Also, are you using a paid plan from DynDNS? Or the free one?

Thanks for trying to help!

Here's how I have mine setup:

Prerequisites:

  • A DDNS Account
  • Dynamic Global Host Name

Setup (AirPort Utility v5.x):

  • AirPort Utility > Select the base station > Manual Setup >AirPort > Base Station tab > Edit ...
  • Use dynamic global hostname (checked)
  • Hostname: dyndns.com
  • User: <enter your DynDNS user account name>
  • Password: <enter your DynDNS user account password>
  • Click "Done."
  • AirPort Utility > Select the base station > Manual Setup > Disks > File Sharing tab > Share disks over the Internet with Bonjour (checked)

Setup (AirPort Utility v6.x):

  • AirPort Utility > Select the base station > Edit > Internet > Internet Options...
  • Use dynamic global hostname (checked)
  • Hostname: dyndns.com
  • User: <enter your DynDNS user account name>
  • Password: <enter your DynDNS user account password>
  • Click "Save."
  • Disks tab > Enable file sharing (checked)
  • Click "Update."

To access the AirPort Disk:

OS X: Finder > Go > Connect to Server > Server Address: <your DynDNS Global Host Name>

Which version of the Aiport utility are you using?

I prefer to use v5.6.

Also, are you using a paid plan from DynDNS? Or the free one?

The free one.

I have been enduring constant problems with a Netgear router and Netgear extender of various forms. The ONLY reason i endure the terrible netgear product is that Apple has completely missed the boat on dynamic DNS.

Unlike the suggestion above that its easy to use a OSX based client service (which is what i use with an AE base station at my home), this is NOT possible to use reliably at a second home where there are power outages while i am away. I need to rely on the automatic reboot of the router after a power failure to enable reporting to DYNDNS so that i can access my home automation system, video monitoring and temperature services.

I love all my super easy connectivities of my AE, AX, ATV's with my iMac, kids latpops, several iPads and of course iphones and yamaha reciever, and .....at my main home, utilizing my iMac with DYNDNS for remote access to files etc.

With the netgear router and extedner at my second home, i have to have two networks ( Main and Main_EXT) and switch between them, my AX for music to the home stereo gets dropped in airplay constantly and the Netgear extender will frequently just lose internet connectivty with the main router or while streaming DISH programming through my iPad to an ATV on a "spot" basis, just enough to interrupt the show.

Hours and Hours have been spent trying to get the netgear system to work reliabily as the backbone of my wireless system with only mixed success.

ALL BECAUSE APPLE HAS THEIR HEAD IN THE SAND ON DYNAMIC DNS AND THE NEWEST AIRPORT UTILITIES...

Come on apple.....I'll buy a new one asap if i knew it had this simple option, which EVERY OTHER ROUTER on the market has now.

Thats a great idea. But for an overpriced router combined with another $50 for a pi, it makes it really pricey.

What i have always appreciated from Apple through the years is the onion concept; Keep it really simple for new users, but let advanced users peel and peel to incredible power and customization. However with things like the the new airport utility that no longer allows advanced users to customize, they are alienating their "early adopters" that like to innovate and drive the success of new apple ideas.

Come on Apple.. wake up.. return to an airport utility that really allows complete control for advanced users and for crying out loud, put in dynamic DNS....almost every router including those under $50 have them.

A very unhappy, and very large apple customer and proponent.....

I have an 2TB AirPort Time Capsule and am running OSX 10.9 with AirPort Utility 6.3.2. My web server is a Synology DiskStation DS211j (DSM V3.0). I was able to get DynDNS to work by using the Synology Dyn app within DSM to configure my external dynamic IP. This got me to the AirPort router. Then through the AirPort Utility in Network > Port Settings I added an entry for Personal Web Sharing on port 80 using the static IP I selected for the DiskStation. You just need to make sure you use a static IP outside of the DHCP range. 🙂

Is it still not possible to use Airport Extreme with DynDNS?
