I opened Aperture and all my projects and albums for the last 4 months have gone. Where can I recover them from?

I have lost the last 4 months of photos on Aperture and have no idea why. Can anyone tell me how to recover them? I don't find Mac software that intuitive after using MS for 30+ years.

We will need to know more, to be able to help you to find and restore your images.

  • What exactly do you mean by "lost 4 month of photos". Are earlier projects still visible in Aperture or are all your projects missing?
  • What is your Aperture version and your MacOS X version?
  • And what were the last action you did on your mac, before the photos went missing? Did you install something, update something, run some cleaning tools?
  • Did you move your aperture library to a different location?

Please tell us anything you think that might help to understand what happenend.

Sometimes images appear to be missing, but are only hidden.

  • Have you looked in Aperture's Trash? And the Trash on your Desktop?
  • Have you looked at the searchfields in the browser and Inspector if they are cleared and are showing "All Items" or "Showing all"?

User uploaded file

Have you opened the correct Aperture Library? If you type ".aplibrary" into the Spotlight searchfield in the upper right corner of your screen, do you see more than one Aperture library?

Thank you for the reply. I found them in the trash before your reply but thanks.

I had problems accessing Aperture from Facebook so a "genius" at the Apple shop said I should copy the photos to a desktop folder and access them from that folder. I deleted those folders the other day and I am sure that is why I lost the projects and albums in Aperture. It shouldn't happen like that I'm sure and I don't want to end up with hundreds of folders on my desktop because I can't get photos from Aperture for Facebook.

Any ideas?

Good to know, that you found your image files. Have you tried to put them back using the contextual menu item "put back"? Or did you reimport them?

Then you probably haved moved Aperture's original files instead of copying them. Only this way would deleting the folders remove the images and albums from Aperture.

To upload Aperture albums to Facebook you have two options:

  1. Use the built-in "Share" function in Aperture, see this manual page:
Publishing Images to Flickr and Facebook
  2. Or export your images (not copy from the Aperture library) to a folder, for example a subfolder of "Pictures", and then upload them using Facebooks uploader.

I'd suggest the second option - it is easier: If the network connection to Facebook has problems, this can slow down Aperture considerably; also syncing albums back from Facebook can give unexpected results when Facebook changes the version names to captions added on Facebook.

Thank you for the info and reply. I reimported them, one at a time which was pains-taking. I will look for the put back option. Also I will try you suggestions on the weekend and let you know how I get on if you want. I want to be able to work in Mac as I know people in marketing/advertising who have sworn by it since the early days.

I have not given up, just frustrated with new learnings. Could be an age thing but will not give up.

Thanks again for the support.

I will be in touch

Good Luck, Graham.

"Put Back": When you moved files and folders to Trash, using the Finder, you can usually select them in the Trash and option-click (or right-click) them, to show a contextual menu. This should have a menu entry "Put Back". And that will restore the items to exactly the folder where they came from, if this folder still exists.

For example:
