Q: Wake from sleep-->Login-->Back to Sleep-->Login. Why?

I recently purchased a MacBook Air Ultimate (i7, 8GB, 500GB), which I love, but logging in after sleep is very annoying. The sequence for the problem is as follows:

1) MBA wakes from sleep

2) I login, everything's fine for a few seconds, then machine goes back to sleep

3) I login again and no issues afterwards.

I'd like to login once after the machine goes to sleep, not twice. Anyone got a thought on how to fix?

So far, I've run OnyX (Mountain Lion version) and repaired permissions. Any ideas to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I just bought and received my new MacBook Air (fully loaded) last week.  I have been experiencing the same issue.  I was a PC user before and have not transferred anything yet.  It is really frustrating and would be great if apple could fix this.  I also seem to have a jumping mouse cursor issue randomly sometimes as well (when I am no where near the trackpad!) which is also rather frustrating.  Being an iPhone and iPad user for years, a Macbook seemed to be the way to go, but so far, I am not impressed.  Especially when this was double the cost of a PC with the same specs.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I have this similar problem on MacBook Air Mid-2011 model. Mine is a little worst in that when it goes to sleep, I can't wake it up right away. I have to close/open the lid multiple times for at least a few minutes before it comes back up. At times, I can't even tell if it'll come back up. It looks like a lot of poeple have this problem. I never had this problem before Mountain Lion install. Let's hope Maverick fixes this issue, as we all know Apple never acknowledges their system have any problems.

Unsure how many people in this thread this may work for, but I was having the same problem as the original poster (wake from sleep, unlock with password, back to black, having to unlock again). I reset my SMC and now it has stopped.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

I did the SMC reset, it seemed to have helped for an hour or two, then the symptomps were back. Very frustrating!

I have the same problem. Apple support uploaded my MBA logs and let the engineers go through them. I got a call yesterday saying it is a hardware issue and to take my 2 month old MBA in for repair.

So now I have to do without my virtually brand new MBA while its being repaired.

You may want to hold up on repair.  I've exchanged my MBA '13, and even with the new hardware, the sleep issue was present on both machines.

I went to genius bar twice. The first time they showed me that by removing /var/vm/sleepimage, and removing just about all my login items including Dropbox, Google Drive and Rescuetime, at least when my machine did go into sleep unexpectedly, it would not get hung.

The second time I left my machine for overnight diagnostics, and they again could not reproduce the issue, but they showed me that by running Googel Chrome, my MBA would hang on sleep.

Ok, so basically, I was having 2 issues:

#1 - my MBA goes into sleep intermittently after I log on (usually after an extended away).  I believe all MBA '13s have this issue.

#2 - when going into sleep, the machine would hang (dark screen with only mouse showing) until hardware sleep.  I believe this has to do with a MBA software bug depening on the way certain applications access memory.

The whole Chrome / memory thing, led me to this thread, which describes similar symptoms ("The screen just goes black, but the mouse cursor is still floating about").  Some of the users on that thread report that the dev version of OSX 10.8.5 solves the issue.

Since 10.8.5 scheduled for release soon (maybe as soon as tomorrow), I was going to wait for this update before exploring any other fixes.

I did a PRAM reset and also did this:

System Preferences --> User & Groups --> Login Options --> Automatic Login --> Your primary user

And its so far so good. Have logged in 3 times since then and each of those times it had worked. I'll let you know if it happens again.

Any updates on this? I bought a new MBA 2 months ago and I'm having the same issue. I also don't think my battery last anywhere near 10 hours.

It could be luck, but so far since upgrading to Mavericks, I haven't had the issue again. In fact, when I open my lid, the login prompt is displayed very quickly, vs before where it would take 5-10 seconds. Crossing my fingers that the issue is resolved with Mavericks.

I am crossing my fingers too, but ever since the maverick update and there was a system update particular to our MBA 2013, I haven't had the double login or the black scree

Try updating if you are still having issues

I did all updates and still had the same proble. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar. They had to replace my logic board and since then I've not had a problem.
