My daughter is able to face time my iphone while we are both at home using the same wi-fi. but when I am away from home, I am not able to face time her ipod touch.
She has no trouble face timing her cousins Ipad mini.

We are able face time while we are both connected to our home wi-fi network.

Are you trying to FaceTime when your iPhone is connected to an available wi-fi network when away from home?
no. I try it, using my own connection( data)
That is likely the reason why.
Does your cell phone carrier support FaceTime over their network?
If so, is this included with your data plan?
If yes, do you have Use Cellular Dara enabled at Settings > FaceTime?
my phone carrier is sprint.
