My MacBook Air suddenly stopped recognizing my iOmega eGo 500 GB Hard Drive

Question

One day last week my portable hard drive stopped being recognized by my MacBook Air.  I have been using it w/o issue for over a year and a half.  I use it both attached directly to my macbook and attached to my airport extreme base station.  It is not visible in disk utility, but it is recognized in system information with this information...eGo USB:  Product ID:          0x0070  Vendor ID:          0x059b  (Iomega Corporation)  Version:           0.00  Serial Number:          09000000000215A9  Speed:          Up to 5 Gb/sec  Manufacturer:          Iomega  Location ID:          0x14900000 / 3  Current Available (mA):          900  Current Required (mA):          224I do hear rhe disk spining when it is plugged in. Open the Console, (search for Console in spotlight) and open System.log.   Plug the disk into the unit and see if there are any errors or warnings visible in the console shortly after plugging it in.   Paste what ever happens at that moment into here.

Yes, I have an older portable hard drive. Hmm.... Is this a usb 2.0 drive, or a usb3.0 drive?  If it is a usb2.0 drive, Do you have another usb cord you could try to use between the computer and the drive?I believe you may have a faulty line between the disk and the computer. Since other drives work in the same usb port, that rules out the port as the cause of the problem. The only two possibilities now are a faulty cord between the comp and the drive,   or the drive itself.   Have you tried the drive with a different computer?

unfortunately, only one end of the cord is USB, the other end, which connects to the drive, is NOT a mini usb.. so, you think there&#x27;s a good chance it&#x27;s just an issue with the cord?

What is the other end of the cord? Do you have a picture, maybe?  There is a possibility that the cord could be to blame. I am unsure whether it is the cord, or the port on the hard disk. But there is a problem passing data from the disk to the iMac.

Yep, thats a USB 3 Micro plug.  You should be able to take any USB 2.0 Micro cord (like you would charge an android smartphone with) and plug it into the wide end of that plug on the hard disk. The hard disk will run in USB 2.0 mode, which is how I use mine normally.  If the port on the computer and the port on the drive works, then it SHOULD work.  If it doesnt work with a presumably working cord, then the port on the hard disk is probably bad.

That bottom one will work. As long as you have it facing the correct direction and are attempting to plug it into the wide end of the port  (the bottom side of your pic of the 3.0 plug) it should fit.
