I have a Gdrive mini and 2 LaCie hard drives that connect fine using USB. Thunderbolt to fire wire 800 adaptor will not connect to either my MAC air or LaCie drives. Help

I have a G drive mini and 2 LaCie hard drives that connect fine using USB. Thunderbolt to fire wire 800 adaptor will not connect to either my iMAC or Mac air or LaCie drives. Help

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), also mac air
