Just bought a Canon MX890 multifunction. OS 10.6.8. Used Canon support to help me set up wireless and I can print wireless but it will not scan wireless. Error message reads: "Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons: Scanner is turned off or USB cable is disconnected." Any suggestions?
Launch the Image Capture app located in HD > Applications
Select the scanner/printer on the left. The printer should recognize the scanner at that point.
Click Scan bottom right corner of that Image Capture window.

Sounds like you are trying to use Canon's MP Navigator application. To get this to work via wireless, you first need to open Canon IJ Network Selector which is located in Applications > Canon Utilities. With this application open it should show you the MX890 on the network. Select it and OK the change.
Next step is to open the MP Navigator application and click on the Preferences button. Then from the General tab you need to ensure the Canon MX890 Network is set.
With these two actions completed you should be able to scan with MP Navigator.
Or as Carolyn has instructed, you can use Image Capture which is included with OS X to scan from the MX890.
Re the Canon IJ Network Selector.....tried this approach but, unfortunately, I still get the error message which I quoted in my original email.
Nonetheless, the Image Capture works fine and I want to thank you both for your quick replies.
Once you select the Scanner in Image Capture as a Shared Scanner, Select the Printer in the IJ Network Scanner Selector. After you have complete that also complete the IJ Network Tool. Lastly this will bring you to the Add Printer/Scanner window. Select Bonjour Multifuction and change Airport to MX890 series. Lastly in the MP Navigator window click the preferences tab and select the Scanner to be MX890 series Network. Do not select the MX890 Series.
