unable to hear sound on my HP w2408h monitor using imac mini

So I have a new mac mini. My monitor is an HP w2408h, built in speakers and has hdmi input. I connected the mac mini output cable to the monitor but no sound. Once removed, the only sound is coming from the mac mini. I get video but no sound through the monitor.

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

I would be surprised if you need an adapter. Here is another thing to check. Go into your system preference and click on Sound. Click the output tab. Is you monitor highlighted. If not, highlight your monitor and check your audio.

Another crazy question. When you say new mac mini, do you mean a 2013 or is it a used but new to you mac mini. If it is used and is a pre-2010, are you using a mini display port to hdmi cable. If so, the mini display port will not push sound, even with an adapter.

Good Luck.
