how do I install os x on a mac with no operating system

A friend gave me an IMAC but the hard drive was wiped out. Is there a way to download an operating system?

Do you know which operating system it came with?

it was 10point something

Well that narrows it down to about 2001-present, and either 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, or 10.8.

Try holding the Command and R keys on a connected keyboard while booting up. If it came with 10.7 or later, this will enter the Recovery partition, where you can reinstall OS X.

If it came with something earlier, we'll need to try to narrow down the year. Is it white or aluminum (silver)?

There are no downloads, it is only available on disk, and no longer available from Apple. You would have to find it from a third party, or try to find a copy on a site like eBay.

A month ago, I took a 2001 iMac that had no OS on it to an Apple Store, and they loaded one on for me at no charge. No guarantee that your local one will do the same but it may be more convenient to try.
