you can try cleaning the optical heads of the dvd drive with a cleaning disc or there are some other options.
But in the end you might as well get a new external dvd drive as the one in your mac might be failing.
If cleaning doesn't help, Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.
Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

How to Handle and Clean CD and DVD Discs
Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
I have always used the same discs so dont think its that issue. I have tried changing the speed that didnt do anything. Now it is having issues readind CD discs as well! may very well have to purchase an external DVD drive but could do with a cheeper fix? any more suggestions im not very good tho if you could explain in as much detail as possible will be much appreciated!
You can buy any external DVD drive that connects by USB and it will work on your mac. It does not have to have the Apple name on it to work correctly with your mac. Most go for around $30.
The main reason i use the drive iis to burn DVD's trying to find the best external DVD drive to do this but its proving difficult.
Looks like it does the job. Price ok too. only downside would look ugly next too my sexy MAC.
