Better way to copy files?

I'm trying to copy files from a damaged User acc't to a backup drive. The process keeps choking on bad files. Then all copying stops and I can't even close the copying window. Is there a way I can copy "around" bad files that keeps the process going for the remaining good files? I get an Error 36.
