Will Migration Assistant for OS 10.4 and OS 9.1 replace the OS and files?

I have 2 PowerBook G4s which I have used for different purposes. One has OS 10.4 and the other has OS 10.4 and OS 9.1. I would now like to replace everything on the one with only 10.4 with the stuff on the one that has 10.4 and 9.1.

Can I use Migration Assistant to replace everything including the system so that I will have both 10.4 and 9.1 on both computers (both computers will mirror each other)?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Migration Assistant moves only select files.

Target disk mode.

If you have a second Mac computer, you may want to try to copy over as many files you can. One way is to use target disk mode.

Here is a picture of a firewire port:

You need cloning software.

Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external firewire drive. You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

9.1 doesn't require any special software to copy. You may have to "bless" the software after copying. Drag some file -- system suitcase ?? -- to the outside then inside of the folder.

I suggest getting a firewire cable . Boot up the target machine in firewire mode. command + t if my memory serves me right.

as far as updates go, I doubt OS X reports a downlevel classic environment.

Thank you very much..i'll give it a try. I did find a web site which gives detailed instructions on using and restoring using CCC. I'm just not real clear on wether or not I need to reformat the target disc or target computer before I copy and restore. It looks like I can set it to merge or replace. I'm not real familiar with partitioning and I don't want to change any existing configuration. I have to verify the info I have on my target computer. I think I want to replace everything, including the system and apps. rather than merge.

Thank you, my only concern is that some of my old files and apps. will no longer be compatible.

Also, i'm not familiar with how to update 9.1 on a computer with both 9.1 and OS 10.4 on it. Do I just select on the update and the right stuff happens or is there something else I need to do to make sure 10.4 is not affected. This is all new stuff to me.

You indicate you would like to erase all files on the target machine.

Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities ->Disk Utility

Select the partition to erase. Notice the partition is indented under the volumn name.

Click on the erase tab on the lower right.

Thanks for your patience. I have never used the erase...scares me! I guess I should use CCC for backup in case I screw it up. Also, thanks for the link to "bless". I never heard that term before. Some time ago tried to reinstall 9.1 into one of my powerbooks but it never worked. Maybe it was because it needed to be "blessed".
