I just purchased a mac book MD101B which comes with Lion but with a proviso that i will be able to upgrade free of charge to mountain lion- i cannot see anywhere though how this is available for download without paying? Does anyone know the secret?!

All new Macs should come with OS X Mountain Lion. The free upgrade program to Mountain Lion finished some months ago, so if you have a Mac with Lion, you have to pay for OS X Mountain Lion.
If you can, I recommend you to return your computer and get another one with Mountain Lion. If you want to keep the one you have now, you can purchase OS X Mountain Lion or, if you want, you can wait until OS X Mavericks is released. Read > http://www.apple.com/osx/preview
