Missing purchased music

I have many Apple devices and it seems my iphone 4 can download missing songs but I can't seem to figure out why my itunes media has missing songs to begin with and how to restore or redownloadb them. I have tried connecting my iphone to my computer using itunes and right clicking to "transfer purchases" and it doesn't seem to work. I can see my past purchases in 'My Account" and there isn't any way to download it again. I don't have Apple TV, and I have even tried the highlighting itunes store then on the right side clicking on "purchased" then highlighting music and it just doesn't have any of the purchases i have made and they were all made on this (MACbook Pro 17") computer I'm using with itunes. My ipad is an older 160 gig unit and it also doesn't like it when I connect it to my computer anymore. I have current software. HELP Please

If the tracks are still listed in the Music part of your Mac's iTunes library (even if the music files themselves are no longer on your Mac) then 'transfer purchases' won't copy them back from your phone - that will only copy those purchases that are no longer listed in your Mac's library.

If you can re-download songs on your phone (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then you should also be able to re-download them on your Mac's iTunes via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page - but similarly they will show as 'downloaded' if they are still listed in the Music part of your library, they will only get the cloud symbol for re-downloading if you delete them from there.

If you aren't in a country where music can be re-downloaded, and if they are still in the store, then you can try contacting iTunes Support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

No these are the songs with itunes can't find that are missing from my itunes media library. I have my music library on an external drive and somehow some of my music disapeared. I have looked on my computer's hard drive for another itunes media folder and these songs aren't there. Is there another place they might be?

So I'm thinking I either need to get OS10.7 over higher on one of my computers or purchase the songs again.

Well, I just tried purchasing an album over again and it lead me to the Purchased page but I still don't understand how to redownload. The message says Downloaded on the right on the song list grayed out.

My original ipod is also having issues again syncing up to itunes. This isn't going so well.

If it says 'downloaded' next to them when you go to the Purchased link under Quicklinks then are they still listed in the Music part of your iTunes library i.e. where you would normally click on them to play them in your iTunes library ? If they are, then even though you may not have the actual files for them, iTunes is seeing those entries in your library and is assuming that you have them somewhere and that there is no need to be able to re-download them - try deleting one of those 'entries' from your iTunes library and the 'downloaded' for it should then change to a cloud symbol on the Purchased link allowing you to re-download it.

Thanks very much for all your support, I deleted a song yesterday and it just didn't offer up the icloud download like today. However I don't understand where itunes puts these downloads? I found one album I redownloaded today on my laptop drive when my itunes only uses my external drive that is connected only when I open itunes. I'm just not confortable with itunes.
