I'm getting this message when I turn on computer, Do I need to do anything?

Message: Your start up disk is almost full, you need to delete files to free up space. The help feature says this is a known message and it has some to do with the disk utility erase free space feature. I don't really understand and want to make sure there aren't any steps I need take.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive

1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.

2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.

3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.

4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.

6. See The Storage Display.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.

You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

You haven't got a lot of free space on the hard drive, so you have to delete files or move them to an external drive in order to avoid a lack of performance and free space to save things.

Open Finder, navigate through all your user's folders and remove all the files you don't need or move them to an external drive. Also, delete all the applications you don't need. Doing this, you will get a lot of free space.

Another option is to make a backup of everything, erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X. Doing this, you will have a lot of storage and you will start from the beginning, choosing what to migrate to the internal hard drive. Apart from that, you can install a bigger hard drive
