If you are trying to mirror your display using Apple TV, that requires an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

If you want to use AirPlay Mirroring, it requires OS X Mountain Lion and an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro, so you can't use it with your computer.

Instead, you have to use a third-party application like AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com

If you want to use AirPlay, first make sure that the Mac and Apple TV are connected to the same network. Then, open iTunes and you will see the AirPlay icon in the toolbar
