Are you sure you mean Contract Free or Unlocked...
UNLOCKED iPhone 5
The unlocked iPhone only works on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S.
When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S or a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5 from a local GSM carrier.
The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint. Limit two per customer

Then you will require an Unlocked iPhone.
Thanks but my question was: "Can i buy an Unlocked iPhone in an applestore in the US?"
(and by applestore i mean a real store not the internet store.)
I realise that... that is why I posted the Retail Store link so you can call them and ask.
Ohh ok!
But i'm in Europe and they cannot answer me.
You can purchase an unlocked phone in the US that can be used internationally, however it is not set for the LTE networks in Europe. Also, the warranty on the iPhone sold in the US is only good in the US. Also, in the US, an phone referred to as SIM free in the US is not the same as SIM free in Europe. All that means here is without a contract, but it is still locked to a particular carrier. You need to make sure you ask for an actual unlocked phone.

If you are in Europe you cannot buy one from the US store anyway, you would have to travel over here in person. The US stores will not ship overseas.
i am coming back to the us on vacation this summer 🙂 thats why i'm asking
thxs for all the information!!
i see you come for Illinois and like i m coming to chicago this summer i wanted to no if they were applestore in Chicago or in the region
One has to ask: how long you are in Europe? If Europe is your normal location, then buy your iPhone in that location.
So many peoploe look at prices in the US and then make the following errors:
Buy in the US but don't realise ridiculously low prices do not include the stupendous cost of a two year contract with a US carrier, and resultant usage only within the US.
US unlocked price does not include Sales tax, import duty, and VAT on importing the phone.
Buy in the US and there is no warranty cover outside the US.
Really dumb idea.
I live permanantly in Europe and what do you mean buy "the stupendous cost of a two year contract with a US carrier, and resultant usage only within the US". It would really interest me knowing to be able to calculate the final cost.
Irrespective of the cost... If you live / reside in Europe then make your Purchase there.
and as stated...
Buy in the US and there is no warranty cover outside the US
You should read this too - http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE
The a1429 GSM model supporting LTE in Europe is not sold in the USA.
If you have read the responses, you should be at least guided towards a logical decision. Just to be sure, exactly how much do you mistakenly beleive you will pay, and therefore save, by buying an iPhone in America?
