Basically I add anold VHS of some family unedited family video. I was not sure how to get it into imovie so i went to coscto because they have a service that creates dvds from VHS's. I now have the dvd. But when I pop it into the macbook the dvd player automatically start... How can i get this content into imovie so that i can edit it?

In order to recover a non-encrypted video DVD you need a program such as HandBrake: Open Source Video Transcoder

how do you know if it is encrypted or not?
Encryption is usually present on professional DVD releases of hollywood movies, i doubt Costco applies any kind of encryption. Handbrake should be able to extract the DVD foottage and create a file you can import in iMovie (mp4, mov etc.)

first, you need to go to system preferences -> CD/DVD -> when insert DVD choose ignore

Could I use quicktime screen capture while i play the DVD?
Screen capture will not give you the same quality as using something like HandBrake.
As long as the DVD is of your own video you will not have a problem with encryption.
