My Apple TV 2nd gen will not update, restore, nor reset

I recently attempted to update my apple tv 2nd generation to 5.3. When I attempted to update the software the applle tv stated that my device is up tp date. The current software is 5.0.2. I tried restoring the device and the device stated that it could not update and to try again later (I tried for a few days). I tried reseting the device. It would just shutdown and not turn on again unless I unplugged it then blugged it back in again. The device would turn on with the prior settings.
