How to upgrade to latest OpenSSL

In the few months I've had OS X server (Mountain Lion), I've come to realize that if you don't play ball with the Apple environment, the Mountain Lion will bite you back. So can anyone tell me how to upgrade just the OpenSSL to the latest version, and compile it successfully into the Mountain Lion environment?

This is not something that's been tackled on the forums, so any suggestions would be helpful.

I saw this post, however, that's on Snow Leopard and the Mac OS X Server environment changed dramatically with Mountain Lion. Back on the Snow Leopard version, the httpd.conf file was still being used. All these traditional UNIX files have been deprecated for new, Apple only, configurations. Basically what I need is a list of files that execute the OpenSSL program so that everything works both locally and on the web. Not an easy task and Apple phone support for server did not have an answer either.
