When I tried toadd the printer, there was a message saying that the printer driver for the 2400 series was available, but when I tried to download it, I received an error message saying that I couldn't download it because of a network error. My Macbook is not on a network at the moment. How can I get the driver so I can print?

You need to be connected to a network (ie, wifi or ethernet) to be able to download anything. Have I misunderstood?
related to my question above, the macbook is running Mountain Lion.
Well, I am connected to the internet via Wi-Fi. I meant I wasn't on a network like I would be if I were at school using the school's network.

Try Resetting the Printing System - it re-registers drivers in OS X:

Then try adding the printer in Print & Fax/Scan again.

If you want us to help more, you will need to give us more detailed info. "It didn't work" leaves me wondering exactly what you've done so far.
For example, after clicking Add/+ and selecting the printer you want, have you waited for a full minute for the Mac to find the driver
- OR -
when it starts searching for driver, have you tried going to the pull-down menu where it says "Use: Auto-select," and choosing "Select Printer Software..." to make a manual selection?
When it searched for the driver, I waited until it stopped and this message came up (consistently each of the many times I tried this): Can't download the software for the hp psc 2400 series because of a network problem.
When I typed in the software I wanted, the list it gave me only had the fax function of the psc 2410 and not the print and scan functions. The fax function did download successfully. Right now I'm trying the other url you sent; I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for the continued help!
