Do I need to unmerge my icloud and gmail accounts so that email invitations can be added directly to my calendar?

I recently got a Macbook Air and merged my icloud and gmail accounts during set up. Now it doesn't look like I'm able to add email invitations I receive directly to my calendar. I wonder if I unmerge the accounts if this would solve the problem?
