I'm having problems updating my iPod touch OS.

You need iTunes 10.5 or later on the computer.
If you have problems what problems specifically?
Before yesterday I had iOS 4.1 on my iPod touch 3G. I have one of the latest iTunes in my MacBook Pro. So I tried to update the iPod's iOS by restoring it. It did, but only to 4.2 thus deleting such apps as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. Any idea how to update iOS to 5?
You appear to have a second generation iPod touch, which can't be updated past 4.2.1.

It says iPod touch 3G on the package.
Append the last three characters of its serial number to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords= , load the page, and check the model's entry.

I did. The last three characters of my iPod serial number is 75J and it is an iPod 3G.

Your model is labeled as a third generation model but has a second generation's hardware and therefore can't be updated past 4.2.1.

Isn't it cheating on the side of the manufacturer to sell something labelled as 3G when in fact it is 2G? Unbelievable. I'm very disappoined.
The 8GB "so called 3G" is a 2G (with old hardware.)
Only the 32 and 64 GB models are 3G models. (with new hardware that can run iOS 5.)
From whom did yo opurchase the iPod? Can you post a phots of the package that says it is 3G?
Whne the 3G was introduced, Apple continued to sell the 8 GB 2G with the same updated iOS as the 3G.
According to this logic my iPhone 4 8GB is actually iPhone 3 masquerading itself for 4? Come on...

I don't have the package now, 'cos I purchased it in December 2009 and it said 3G on it. I also checked the serial number and it says 3G...
To check the model # of the actual hardware, go to "Settings"/General/About" and look at what is listed as "Model." My iPod Toush 2G shows "MC086LL"
