An invalid response was received from the device?

For at least the past year, I haven't been able to sync my phone with iTunes. It either freezes, or, recently, has been giving me an "Invalid response blah blah" error. I made two threads to no response. Does anyone know how to fix this? Can Apple make software that isn't complete ****?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.2

iTunes cannot connect to the iPhone because an invalid response received from the device

This error occurs when there are problems communicating through USB. This may be resolved by following the steps for errors 13 or 14 above.

Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)

These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:

  1. Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
  2. Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
  3. Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
  4. Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
  5. There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
  6. Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
  7. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

It may just be your USB cord. Have you tried a different cord? This sounds hardware related and not software related. If you can't get it to work using a different cord, you may try taking to the Apple Store.

Also, you may even try re-installing iTunes. If you can, get a friend with an iPhone and see if your PC can detect their phone, that would help isolate it to being YOUR device.

Also, if you re-installed Windows recently you may check for OS updates. If it's Windows 8, you may try running iTunes in Compatibility mode for Windows 7, or run as administrator.

Thank God its working now! As for the answer to your question, read the first para, for attempted solutions, read second one, for the one that worked, read the third one. I'm using an Iphone 4 Factory Unlocked with IOS 6.1.3 (no system change) and iTunes 11.0.4.4 (after the upgrade).

My laptop had a virus because I didnt have any antivirus installed since I thought windows 8's built in Windows Defender was an antivirus (and well enough at that, but I was mistaken). After installing Kaspersky internet security and scanning my laptop, I removed the virus but still reinstalled windows and removed all my content from the laptop (the docs that mattered) and formatted it. After reinstallation, I reinstalled all the softwares and iTunes, which then asked me for an upgrade and I upgraded to vesion 11.0.4.4 and when I got done with everything and plugged in my phone and it didnt read my phone and gave the error I mentioned before.

I Synced my phone when I had the previous version of iTunes (before the Sep 10 IOS 7 and IPhone 5S / 5C Launch), but the newer version wasnt working. I read here about reinstalling iTunes, the apple mobile support driver and QuickTime (which I did twice), about rebooting my system before using it (which I did), about pausing my internet security/antivirus for a while (which I did againnnn!!!), but to no avail, I even went so far as to erase everything on my phone, and still no luck, and I even went and checked for the apple mobile support driver and iphone drivers in my recognized devices when the phone was plugged in and removed the driver and plugged in my phone again for the software to reinstall but no luck...

Then I uninstalled my internet security (antivirus), uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled it (the latest version all along), and then plugged in my phone (without changing any setting or erasing the network settings) and thank God it started working again... But I was ticked at having to download and reinstall my apps on iTunes and my cell again... ... ... anyway, do tell me it works, i mean, unistalling your internet security, iTunes and then reinstalling them and plugging it in! 🙂 good luck!

Thank you to the person(s) who recommended upgrading to iTunes 12.5 for this problem; I got it to work!

I have an iPhone 5 and a 2009+ iMAC originally running OS 10.6-7. Before I started, I was up-to-date with all programs on my phone and computer (thus why I couldn’t not sync my pictures!). I found and downloaded iTunes 12.5, but had to update my OS to make everything communicate optimally. It took time and patience, but I updated to OS 10.10 then decided to go all the way to OS 10.12 (Sierra). In the process, iPhotos updated to syncing condition, and iTunes 12.5 did as well. I can now take photos off my phone, and load saved libraries back on to my phone.

Fortunately, my old Adobe Creative Suite (CS4) also works with all the changes, after I installed a JAVA upgrade.

In order to for a Mac to even detect an iPhone 7 when it's connected, a minimum Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite) and iTunes 12.5 are required. Anything less, and iTunes will display an error of "An invalid response was received from the device," and nothing will happen. iTunes 12.5 comes with Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite, so that's really all you need.

For older machines, you'll need first to go to wikipedia.org and check to see whether your hardware is capable/ compatible with Mac OS 10.10 or not. You'll find a listing of Mac OS versions and information on which hardware will run on which. If your hardware will run Yosemite, then your next challenge is how to get it installed.

Since Mac OS 10.7, Apple stopped shipping physical media and released updates via the Apple App Store application. Problem is that they remove older versions of Mac OS installation media from the App Store. And, that is, the complete catalog is never available for customers to download- not even for legitimate, licensed customers. So, you'll need to either borrow or purchase a copy of the software media from a 3rd-party online reseller (Amazon, eBay etc.).

If you did manage to download the software at the time it was released from the Apple App Store, then you'll need to check its release date- specifically the year. And, you'll need to temporarily disable automatic time set and roll back the date/ time on your Mac to the same year as the release date of the software, and then install it. Otherwise the software will not install and will say it's corrupted or broken. Once the software is installed, then put your clock settings back to auto or the current date/ time- otherwise, you cannot download the latest updates from the App Store either.

Just my opinion, but I feel the above practice by Apple is extremely predatory and punishing for customers who really need to re-install, recover, or stay on a particular operating system slightly beyond the normal intended product cycle- for whatever reason. But, they don't seem to care much about serving customer needs anymore...

OK, I had same error (no code) that said my iPhone could not connect to iTunes, no response from device, etc. I was able to get around it last night.🙂

Background is that I had not sync'd my phone to my Dell Windows 7 laptop since early December. I had also done iOS upgrade, and am current rev (7.0.6)

Also my iTunes at rev 11.1.5.5

First thing I tried was rolling back my iTunes version to when I knew it worked, no help

The shut down my anti virus, no help.

Went to control panel\system\device manager and tried to re-install iPhone driver. It said the driver was current, and took no action (I think this is related).

This is where I regret being hasty. I used task manager to shut down iTunesHelper.exe, and AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe*32.

After closing these two, I restarted iTunes and reconnected my iPhone, and it worked. One thing interesting I noticed. After using task manager toshut down the 2 running Apple related executables, when I plugged my phone back in, it reinstalled the iPhone driver. This leads me to belive that my driver was corrupted, but the running programs didn't recognize the need to reinstall the driver because it was looking for a rev, not a corruption.. Next time, I would shut the exe's down one at a time and re-open iTunes, reconnect phone after each to see what happens.

I know this may not be the end all, be all, but maybe it will give you somewhere to start. If it happens to mine again, I'll redo thisone step at a time and repost.

That is not correct. The latest version of iTunes is 12.5.1. If you open iTunes, go to Help>Check for Updates. If it will not show that one is available, go to Control Panel, Programs, and see if you can repair Apple Software Update. If not, then you are going to have to remove iTunes and then reinstall from the iTunes download page. This is a glitch in Windows. See this ASC User provided tip for additional information for troubleshooting iTunes and Windows. Apple makes excellent software. The problem is your computer. Which is probably running Windows.

This error usually means there is a USB timing problem in your computer. If you are using a USB hub, don't. If your computer is not a laptop and you are using a USB port on the front of the computer, switch to a port on the back of the computer. If you have other USB devices connected disconnect all except mouse and keyboard. Reboot your computer just before trying to connect. Disable your antivirus temporarily. Install the latest version of iTunes.

Try a different computer.

It can also mean that your phone is jailbroken, but if that's the case you can't get help in an Apple forum.

I am on Vista and after the latest 12.3 update to the iTunes software, iTunes no longer recognizes my iPod... with iTunes saying the iPod gives an "invalid response". I tried completely uninstalling Kaspersky and then uninstalling and re-installing iTunes but still get the "invalid response" message.

The only way I could get it working again is to do a system restore to back-out the iTunes update to the older release and then it sees my iPod again.

Is this just Apple's way of forcing me to buy a new iPod?

I experienced the same issue with an iPad and iPhone SE just after updating their OS to v10.

The computer I was attempting to sync was an All-in-One Desktop running Mac OS X v 10.6.8.

Syncing with iOS 10 on the Mac requires the latest version of iTunes, 12.5.1, and at least OS X 10.9.5. This would explain you receiving the invalid response error.
