Q: An invalid response was received from the device?

For at least the past year, I haven't been able to sync my phone with iTunes.  It either freezes, or, recently, has been giving me an "Invalid response blah blah" error.  I made two threads to no response.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  Can Apple make software that isn't complete ****?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.2

I updated the iMac's OS X to El Capitan and it solved the issue. Thanks for the help.

I updated both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2 to iOS 10.0.2 and both devices are now not recognized by iTunes 12.1.2 (currently newest version) on my Windows 7 PC. I tried connecting my brother's iPad Air 1 with iOS 9.3.5 and that one was detected by iTunes normally. So I'm stuck with both my iOS 10.0.2 devices and can't do work on them in iTunes. This is terrible.

That is not correct. The latest version of iTunes is 12.5.1. If you open iTunes, go to Help>Check for Updates. If it will not show that one is available, go to Control Panel, Programs, and see if you can repair Apple Software Update. If not, then you are going to have to remove iTunes and then reinstall from the iTunes download page. This is a glitch in Windows. See this ASC User provided tip for additional information for troubleshooting iTunes and Windows. Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates  Follow the instructions in the link provided for removing and then reinstalling iTunes.

I did that and it doesn't offer me any newer version. Will try the "repair" thing.

iTunes 12.5 requires OS X 10.9.5 or higher or Windows 7 or higher. You can download it from iTunes.com.

Ok, Check for Update from within iTunes didn't offer me any new version and "repairing" Apple Software Update didn't do anything either. So I went and downloaded the Setup for iTunes manually from Apple's website and installed it over my existing iTunes 12.1.2 installation. That went good and the new iTunes 12.5.1.21 now recognizes my iOS 10.0.2 devices.

Good to hear, but normally installing software in the manner that you did does not produce good results in Windows.

I had the same problem, I was trying to connect my iPhone 5s (iOS 10) to my Macbook Pro (OS X Mavericks).

It seemed like my iTunes version was pretty old for my phone's operating system, which was up to date.

~ Try updating iTunes to the latest version and try reconnecting the phone

This worked for me. Hope it works for you too.

A useless and insulting response. I just upgraded my iPhone to iOS 10.0.2. It was working perfectly until the update. Now it will not sync with iTunes nor will it load photos into iPhoto.
