My Imac isn't displaying all the real instrument effects

I have Garageband 11 on both my macbook, and my imac. On the macbook, there is a full list of real instrument effects, including ones for guitar, one of which is 'ultra clean'. On my imac, I have a similar list of real instrument effects - vocals, drums, bass, etc, but nothing for guitar. It seems very strange that its on one mac but not the other. Anyone know how to recover these missing effects?

Hello BoltonLee,

Take a look at this article about loops not showing.

Named Apple Loops don't appear in the GarageBand loop browser it can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1033

To access the GarageBand loops installed on your computer, please do the following:

  1. Make sure GarageBand is open and you have the loop browser open:
    User uploaded file
  2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
  3. Choose Go > Go to Folder.
  4. Type the directory location: /Library/Audio
  5. Find the Apple Loops folder, and drag it into the GarageBand loop browser.
  6. Wait for Reindexing to complete.

The look of the screenshot in the article is from an earlier version of Garageband but even for the iLife '11 version the steps are still relevant.

Sterling

Sterling,

I think BoltonLee is asking about the Real Instruments effects and not about the Loops Library.

BoltonLee,

Did you set up your iMac using Migration Assistant? The Migration Assistant does not copy the Instrument Library well.

You could try to restore the missing Instruments by copying the missing parts of the Instrument Library from your other Mac. The library is here:

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/

And the Guitar Track Settings are here:

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Real/Guitars/

Hi Leonie

Yes, you are right, its these effects that are missing. I didn't do any migration on to the iMac, I uploaded ilfe11 new, the imac was new too. Bizarre that its not there. So to copy over, what would you suggest, drag and drop via air drop? Do i just drag the missing folders into the same place in the library on my iMac? Will garageband then automatically read the files or is there something else i should also do?

Thanks for your help

Use Air Drop or copy the Guitar over on a thumbsdrive, to avoid network drop outs.

Then install them in exactly the same place as on your old Mac, assuming the GarageBand versions are the same on both macs.

Quit GarageBand before you are doing this, and after installing the instruments I'd log off and on again, before restarting GB.

I'd compare both the /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/ and the Apple Loops folder, that Sterling R pointed to, to see what else might be missing.

Hi Leonie

I followed your diagram on how to locate the folders on my IMac. The list of folders was exactly the same as what you sent me.

I have been unable to do the same on my macbook as for some reason there isn't a HD icon on my desktop, and by accessing finder, it doesn't list library as a tab. I'd be grateful if you could let me know how bring a HD icon back on my desktop, then i may be able to follow the trail of the screen grab you sent.

However, to show the effects that are missing from my Imac please see both screen grabs. The one from my macbook clearly shows the guitar effects that are available in real instruments, while the screengrab from the Imac shows what is missing.

Thanks for your help

You can configure what is shown on your Desk top from the Finder's Preferences:

Go to the Finder's main menu bar and open the Finder's preferences. In the "General" tab you can enable what you will see on the Desktop, and in the "Sidebar" tab you can enable the items in the Sidebar.

To open the libraries, you can type (copy and paste) the pathes below into the Finder's "Go" menu:

The library is here:

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/

And the Guitar Track Settings are here:

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Real/Guitars/

Finder > Go > Go To Folder ⇧⌘G

What about the screengrabs showing the difference in guitar effects?

Unfortunately, the screengrabs did not upload. I am only seeing the filenames on your Desktop. Did you use the little camera icon in the Toolbar to upload the files or did you paste them into the message? You need to upload using the camera icon in the editor.

For that you can right click the file and choose get info.

Then go down to Sharing and Permissions and click the lock in the lower right and enter your password to unlock it.

Then use the + in the lower left to add your current user to the list of permissions.

You may need to click the gear icon to the right of the + and - and choose apply to enclosed items.

THANK YOU!!! I'm having the exact same problem. If I go in...

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Real/Guitars/

...I can see everything that is included in GarageBand, but the "Guitars" folder is named "Guitar Track" on my machine. I also have the latest version 6.0.5 of GarageBand '11, and I can not imagine why otherwise perfectly good software has such a glaring issue.

How on earth do I get these Guitar effects in to GarageBand???

UPDATE:

I just fixed it myself. I renamed the folder from "Guitar Track" to "Guitars", and now the Guitars category and all of the effects show up in GarageBand.

My question now are as follows:

A) What happened that this was a problem in the first place?

B) Where did really good effects like "Modern Rock" and others go? Were they dropped and replaced with other effects?
