how do you get more instruments in garageband

The simplest way to get plenty of additional software instruments for GarageBand '11 is to buy MainStage 2 from the AppStore.

Mainstage will install all six JamPacks with hundreds of additional sampler instruments (guitars, basses, horns, pianos, harps, organs, drums, many ethnic instruments, like flutes and strings, bagpipes, accordions, ...) and many more Apple Loops. You can use them directly in GarageBand wthout any additional setup.

You can buy MainStage 2 from the App Store ($30 U.S). That is really a bargain - the JamPacks sold separately used to cost 500$.

Great tip!

I can use all the new loops, but when I look for the real instruments all I get is basic tools. Mainstage 2 is fully installed, but the instruments do not show up, except strangely in one of the projects.

Any thoughts on where I went wrong?

Did you download all of the additional content in Mainstage 2?

Launch MainStage once and select (from the main menu bar) MainStage < Download additional Content and check all missing packages:

Yes I did, all six jam packs are installed (as shown in your message) and in Garageband they show up when I click 'show all' in Browse, but when I then select any of the jam packs I get nothing. I only seem to have the real instruments from Garageband.

I noticed that it is also different depending on which track I click, with Grand Piano I see more instruments than with Drums, for example, but I can live with that and perhaps that is even how it should be.

Will mainstage includes guitar Amos aswell?

MainStage has Guitar amps, but that are the same as I am seeing already in GarageBand 10.

I have MainStage 2, so I cannot say for sure,what you will get with MainStage 3.
