Oct 12, 2013 12:17 PM in response to Samurai2kby clubmanplus850,this seems to be an issue in (mountain lion?) disk util - actually the second bug that I know of now.
I am having the same issue whilst using zeroDIsk - however the system going to standy seems to slow the task down, it hasn't failed yet.
From what I can see caffeinate will solve the issue (in mountain lion)

Oct 12, 2013 1:07 PM in response to Samurai2kby baltwo,System Preferences->Energy Saver->ensure all sleep modes are disabled, then ensure that all software on the ext HD has been removed and that you formatted it correctly, See http://help.bombich.com/kb/overview/preparing-your-backup-disk-for-a-backup-of-m ac-os-x for a simple guide on how it should be prepared for a backup/clone. BTW, you can get a 30-day trial version of CCC, which might work better than Disk Utility, since DU requires making a block-level backup.

Oct 15, 2013 7:56 AM in response to baltwoby clubmanplus850,Im not sure as to the OP intention, and your response may be correct - for clarity on my response, I was in recovery mode (without an OS installed yet actually) and therefore the Energy Saver options aren't applicable, in this situation, caffeinate was the answer.
I stumbled on this discussion when looking for my own issue, so thought id post the solution i found
