Two migrations at once: G5 to Intel and 2g to 5g

I currently own a 2nd generation iPod Touch, which I've got synced to the iTunes library on my old
G5. My library includes a lot of music ripped from my old cassettes and CD's, not just iTunes purchases.

I'd like to buy a new (5th generation) iPod, but it won't sync to my G5 because the computer can't run iTunes 11.

AFAIK, I can't use iCloud sync because neither the old iPod nor my G5 support it.

I do have an Intel-based Mac mini running Snow Leopard (and iTunes 11) at my disposal, and both old and new Macs are networked.

What steps do I need to go through to make the move?

Then backup the old iPod n the newer Nac

iOS: How to back up and restore your content

I'm not ready to move completely away from the G5 - that and someone else uses the Intel mini on a regular basis. If I turn on Home Sharing (which I read about after following one of the links you provided), can I sync the new iPod to the (remote) backup on the G5? Or will I still need to back up the old iPod to that machine first?

The backup is not included in Home Sharing, just iTunes media is shared.

Yhus, you can backup the old iPod to the newer Mac and then restore from tht backup with the iTunes media in the iTunes library via Home Sharing.
