the firefox icon on the desktop doesn't give me the option to move it to the trash. the closest thing is "eject firefox" and it won't let me do that because it says it's "in use" even if i close all the firefox windows. i did move it to the applications folder, though.

one thing i don't understand is why the icon on the desktop looks like a hardrive or something with the firefox logo on it as opposed to just the normal circular firefox logo.

by the way, when i downloaded it, it did not give me any options as to what folder i wanted to save it in or anything.

mac os is new to me so sorry if i sound like an idiot.

Okay, let me see if I can remember this correctly (i dont have my macbook with me right now).

First close all instances of firefox.
Then click on that hard drive looking thing that says firefox.
You'll get a window with a firefox icon in it.
Drag this icon into the Applications folder of Finder. This should install firefox for you. Once this is done, close the window with the icon, and delete the hard drive/firefox icon from your desktop.

I tried dragging the file into my applications folder to find that there was already a firefox folder there. I then closed firefox, ejected it using the folder on the desktop, and drug the mac HD logo folder for firefox in my trash can. I emptied the trash and tried to open firefox again and a question mark came up on the logo telling me that I had deleted it. I did this once before and had to download the software again. Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Kelsey

This is an old thread, but I have the same problem. When I open Firefox it shows me the box that indicates that I should drag the firefox icon to my app. folder. I've done that. It installs and then after closing all firefox apps I try to delete the hard drive looking icon of firefox, but it turns the trash into an eject icon. I eject it and then open firefox again. It reopens with the same window telling me to drag it to the app. folder. I can't get rid of the hard drive looking firefox icon because it only lets me eject it. So I keep going through this circle everytime I open firefox.

Anyone know the problem here?

The other problem I have is that I trashed the firefox.dmg file and whenever I try to empty the trash it says that the firefox.dmg is still in use and can't be deleted.

What do you do with .dmg files? They seem very common when downloading programs for the Mac. They always show up on the desktop. Do they need to be put somewhere? Or can they be deleted after the programs have been downloaded? Some of them seem to go away without a problem and others, like firefox, won't go away.
